I saw this show and it was amazing...I have a hard time seeing younger people playing these roles though...sorta like hearing a high school senior belting IM STILL HERE (See "Camp").

Um, so listening to If I Didn't Believe In You for like the 10th time today, I think it really IS just about as close to perfection as you can possibly get. Just, everything about it. Norbert. is. pure. brilliance. And I LOVE the transition from that into I Can Do Better Than That! just, the way it goes from SO sad and heartbreaking to so happy gives me chills. I think thats one of the most brilliant things about the show actually in general... is the whole timeline thing and the way they're going in different directions. I cant even put my finger on WHAT it does to make the show that much more amazing... but it just does.
oh and jessica0414, I'm SO in love with Jamie too, or at least, when he's played by norbert! omg. *melts* <33
if every show had sherie and norbert in it, the world would be a much, much, MUCH better place. Thats all I'm gonna say.
I wholeheartedly agree. Norbert and Sherie are Broadway magic, and L5Y is brilliant. Like all my other favorite shows, my favorite songs change every week. Overall I'd give the edge to Still Hurting and The Schmuel Song.
Right now I'm listening to See I'm Smiling. I *love* Sherie's meltdown on this song!
While I don't love it as much as L5Y, Songs for a New World also has quite a few songs that are gems on it.
I love the Last 5 Years. It's beautiful, and Sherie and Norbert sound amazing.
I'm curious what people think -- what do you think are the reasons why Cathy and Jamie break up? And what do you think are the reasons why they got together in the first place?
This show's cast recording has a special place in my heart becuase I received it for Christmas last year, the same day that I found out that my father and stepmother were getting divorced. Listening to it really helped me get through that and move on, and heal. It's an amazing score, the only musical theater my mother will actually listen to, and one of my very favorite shows.
The Next Ten Minutes is going to be my wedding song.

aaahh The Last 5 Years. Honestly my absolute favorite show and cast recording. Norbert and Sherie are PERFECT in every sense of the word in this show. I've gotten many of my friends to be obsessed with this show. It is SO hard to pick my favorite song because I actually love all of the songs (which is rare for me), but "If I Didn't Believe in You" is definitely my favorite. Norbert puts so much emotion and intensity into the song on the cast recording. Every time I hear the lyric of "I will not fail so you can be comfortable, Cathy. I will not lose because you can't win" , I get chills. Man... I love this show

Kitz -- I, too, am not a fan of "The Schmuel Song." It's the only song I ALWAYS skip.
Danielm -- Why did you feel that the show was no up to par? Just curious, seeing as how you're probably the only one responding who's seen it.
I feel that "I can do better than that" and "Nobody needs to know" are JRB's greatest songs.

seriously, if I didn't believe in you is just.. ahhh. Amazing writing, but its really norbert's out of this world acting that makes it so spine-tingling and heartwrenching
and I LOVE shmuel... the story itself is a little silly but 1)norbert's yiddish accent is like the greatest thing ever hehe and 2)the end is SO wonderful, the whole part where he's supposed to be talking to cathy. One of the sweetest things ever.
oh, and so I just realized- Sherie sounds SOO much like Bette Midler, especially in Summer in Ohio!! exept, she's almost better than bette midler I think (though bette really is awesome too) :P but yeah, I was like, woahhh

"Til the world explodes..."
Gorgeous.
I used to skip over "Schmuel" but then fell in love with its end bit. When he's talking to Cathy, it's just adorable and so evident how much he cared for her during that time.
There isn't a song that I don't like on this CR. "If I Didn't Believe in You" is my favorite song out of any show I've ever heard the music from. It's just...wow. Brilliant. Jason Robert Brown, you are amazing.
I also reccomend listening to "Parade" for anyone has yet to. It's a different style than "The Last 5 Years" but it's absolutely gorgeous, as well as my second favorite show after L5Y.

I just recently really listened to the lyrics in "Nobody Needs to Know" and realized what the song is about. It really breaks my heart now...more than it did when I just thought it was beautifully written.
It is an amazing score. Wow, JRB.

I'm still not so sure I actually FULLY understand Nobody Needs To Know Yet... like, I think I get the jist of it and everything, I'm pretty sure I do, but it just seems like its gotta be deeper than what I'm seeing it as.. haha.
Anyone who knows it well want to explain to me what its really about? :) haha, again, I think I get whats going on, but its just the lyrics are so deep and I'm thinking there's probably more to it
(by the way, threadjack, but broadwaybaby086, I am just a liiiil in love with your avi hehe. *fangirls over stephen and his insane young!adorability*)
I saw "If I Didn't Believe In You" being performed multiple times over the summer as a part of the review I was in. It gave me shivers each time I heard it.

lol, well thanks, snl! If only this picture of him wasn't taken about when I was born, all would be well. *wink* well, it's not quite that old, but....ah! I don't know! lol, how old is he?
Anywho, I read the wikipedia synopsis (here, since my html link did not work, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_five_years ) and it became more clear than before. The lyrics had confused me in "Nobody Needs to Know;" I was like, "Who is he talking to?! Their dog! I know they don't have a child..." lol. I don't have the CD sleeve as I *gasp* burned it from a friend, so that offered more info for the uneducated listener.
I babbled, but I don't think I answered your question... haha

Stephen's 35.. which is SO unfair because he seriously does NOT look a day older than like.. 25, or even younger! its such a tease. haha. But anyway yeah, really now, /yummy stephen threadjack :P
ahhh, kk, so yeah I was right in what was going on..
*SPOILER ALERT to anyone who may not know the show*
I got that he was cheating and everything, I just wasnt sure if there was something more to it. Whats amazing, though, is that he's cheating on her at yet you still feel SO BAD for him! I never thought there would be a story where I'd aaalmost feel worse for the person who was doing the cheating than the person who was being cheated on. I blame it on norbert and his amazing sincerity in everything he says/sings :P and also the story and music, but its a lot because of how well norbert delivers that story and music

i loved the recent London premiere production of this, though not many other people did.
the guy playing Jamie was absolutely wonderful, and Cathy was a great singer but her acting left me pretty cold - that part is the harder of the two, anyway.
i think this show is a really well-constructed and beautiful little piece.

i was just wondering about the ending song, "Goodbye Until Tomorrow"
when Cathy sings that, is that the beginning of her relationship with Jamie, and she is just saying she is in love, and will see him soon? and then of course Jamie just divorced/left her... their stories going different ways is awesome, but confuses me sometimes :P
sorry if that is a stupid question!
Yes, "Goodbye Until Tomorrow" is at the beginning of Cathy's story.
weeeeeeeelllll, mike m... here's my 2 cents for your questions!
why did they break up? they couldn't give themselves up.
why did they get together to begin with? they were the polar opposite of what they had experienced before... OPPOSITES ATTRACT>
is that really it in a nutshell? no, because jrb wrote these characters in a more complex fashion than that.
but do i think that's the main jist of it? yeah.
regardless, this is a WONDERFUL piece of theatre.
my 2 cents!

I just recently got into this show. My friend burned me a copy a while ago, but since she told me it was confusing, it took me a long time to give it a first listen. After I went through it once, I drove directly to Borders to buy my own copy. It hasn't left my side since. A favorite song is hard to choose, especially since it changes daily. My favorites to sing, though, are "Summer in Ohio" and "Climbing Uphill."
I can't wait to get Parade.

^actually, its funny your friend told you it was confusing, because I was kind of pleasantly surprised that it didn't seem all that confusing to me as I listened :) It WOULD be very confusing if you didn't know a single thing about it, but once you get that they're going in opposite directions in the relationship, kathy going backward and jamie going foward, its pretty easy to follow from there I think. You just need to get that little detail and then you're pretty much good to go! haha

Yeah. She gave me a plot summary with the disc, so I had things straight from the start. My husband, who didn't read the summary, didn't ask any questions, and only heard the show when we were in the car together, was super-confused for weeks!
