The New Edna in Vegas will be .....

John Goodman, well at least part time. This according to the Las Vegas Sun.

John Goodman is going to join the cast of "Hairspray" at the Luxor, he will be rotating with Paul Vogt(of Mad TV) in the role of Edna Turnblad starting May 1st. Harvey Fierstein leaves the cast on April 30.

I think this is a great choice!

This is excellent news! I only wish it were in NYC.

And Paul Vogt, I think, is also a very good choice. He should be hysterical.

I really wish I could see this now. I think he'll be great in the role. I also can't believe I never though of Paul Vogt in this role. He's perfect for it.

I am worried about John's health too, I thought he wasn't doing well. Maybe he's lost weight?

Actually, I'm very excited as well for Paul Vogt. He was hysterical on Madtv - his Mrs. Garrett was priceless! - so if John isn't up to Broadway, Paul would be a great Edna for us.

Man I would rather see Paul Vogt than Goodman any day. I think both will be fantastic but casting Vogt was simply brilliant. Bravo!

Well, Vogt is a little weird...he scared me on The Re-Run show, but he's not new to drag...so..that's good? haha

Well, John Goodman did just come off a decent run of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof at LA's Geffen Playhouse. I'm sure he can handle the 90-minute Hairspray 'lite' a few times a week.

I think he'll be great

yeah, Goodman in the role is kinda like harvey because his voice is SOOO low and manly, you don't have to pretend he's not a man. You can just sit back and have fun watching it!

Just the last time I saw him (during Katrina stuff, I think) he looked like he had put on a lot of weight and seemed to not have a lot of energy. That, of course, is my expert diagnosis made via one appearance on a television screen. Hey, it worked for Bill Frist.

Besides his weight, he was dealing with some other issues that would make it difficult to sustain the role. Here's hoping those health concerns are gone...cause I think he's pretty freaking great.
