Cause God knows a musical is never complete without a good old fashioned rape!
Ok so the review that you were responding to was just dumb, but *this* response kinda made me laugh, not even gonna lie... and, it also made me go to the nyc.gov website, just because I am that strange, and there were actually more rapes reported in the UES last week than in Washington Heights... but I still would have expected more from a review in The Advocate, but maybe that's just me...
hehe. It was such a ridiculous sentence that deserved to be mocked. I am just continually disappointed with the reviewers who are surprised that someone who is Latino would write a musical that shows the positive side of our culture. Like we needed yet *another* example of gang violence among Latinos. It's refreshing to have a different voice, that's nonetheless true to who we are.
And, really, the whole rape thing is so insanely offensive and ridiculous. As is the phrasing, which, again just makes it seem like he *wanted* to see rapes on a Broadway stage. And thanks for researching those statistics. Ideas of violence in El Barrio are grossly exaggerated by the media. Not that it doesn't happen, but, please. I have family who lives there, and I grew up in PR, which has one of the highest crime rates in the US (in the polls that count us as a US territory). Yet I never experienced these things in my daily life.
I too would've expected better from The Advocate. But at this point, I'm not surprised anymore.
^^ yep, June 3rd is the release date, but if you order it at the theatre you'll get it in May sometime- I am choosing to pay $35 for it (vs $16.99 plus shipping on amazon.com) so that I can get it a month earlier- *that* is how much I want it, lol.
I wish! I can't stop wearing my "No pare, sigue, sigue!" shirt! heehee just too perfect... I'm am most likely going back this summer and seeing it with my best friend She really wants to see it. I think I am going put a little jar on my kitchen counter that says "In the Heights funds" and just putting all my spare change in there!!

"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu
After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu
haha it's actually in the wash right now! lol But yeah I got the idea when I was staying with my cousin and her fiancée in the city and they had a jar labeled "wedding fund". My cousin is getting tickets to the show for her fiancées birthday, actually, based on my review of the show!

All I can think of when I hear "no pare, sigue sigue" is that cheesy Proyecto Uno song, "El Tiburon". I danced the sh*t out of that tune back in the day.
