I am guessing that they are slowly taking all of the curses out.
Wife saw it on Weds, and said they had removed a few. I saw it Thurs, and a few were removed (the F**K the ring) - BUT, Andrea still said show some ""FU*Kin" spirit.
My guess is that they must have changed that line as well.
I dont really have a problem with those changes. Still LOVE the show to death !
I really resent censorship. I don't know, it just feels so pointless to take out these words, as if it's going to have some detrimental effect on a child who sees the show. I understand wanting the show to be family friendly, and some of those f*cks are unnecessary, but it adds a layer of realism to these characters. I think if a kid is mature enough to go to a Broadway show, it shouldn't matter that there are a few curse words sprinkled here and there. They're just expletives, and in no way offensive. I don't know, I'm not liking hearing about this. Not a huge deal, but it's still a little disheartening.
But are the Spanish curse words still in? Will they "censor" those as well? Cause that would really annoy me. Not to mention that it's kind of a double standard. Let's make the show more family friendly for the English speaking kids, but screw the Latino kids (who are more likely to be seeing this show anyway).
I wonder how much of this was a creative decision, or if the producers had an influence.
Ok just re-read what I posted, and realized I forgot to add in the part about how much I do still *love* this show- it sounds so cheese but it really does make my heart happy when I get to see it. And I too completely have issues with dancing in my seat while watching it, which is made worse by the fact that I have only ever seen the show from lotto seats, so it's trying to *not* move while also having the actors thisclose to you.
And I still say 96,000 completely needs to be the Tony performance number.
But, yeah, the deleting of the f-bombs is a little weird. Especially since, (besides the fact that the Spanish curse words are still there, as far as I can tell, and besides the fact that sh*t is still used- unless that's not 'as bad as' f*ck?), I know it's early in the run and all, but it's late enough in the game that people 'know' those lyrics- isn't this the kind of thing you change around during previews?
I was reminded today that The Wedding Singer used to have 'matinee lyrics' and then 'evening lyrics,' where the evening had cursing and the matinee didn't, and I'd just figured that was what was going on at Heights, until I read on here that "keep the ring..." that people were hearing that at the evening show too. But the loss of "...show some f*cking spirit" was a little depressing, I have to say.
I refuse to believe Daniela would EVER say "freaking". She's too cool for that lameness. bleh.
It's so stupid. It's not like they're saying "f*ck" in a sexual context. It's just a f*cking expletive for f*ck's sake. And it's especially disheartening given all the criticism that the show was already too "sanitized".
Not that I think any less of the piece as a whole, mind you. I'll always love it with every fiber of my being. But it's nevertheless disappointing that they seem to be bending over to conformity.
However, today at the matinee Andrea's line before Carnaval del Barrio was "...show some freaking spirit
That's upsetting, I loved that part.

that's really dumb, though I must say it doesn't annoying me nearly as much as Spring Awakening censoring all their stuff at events... the show is ABOUT why censorship is bad.

Listening to the "off-bway demo" now, and so many of the lyrics are different. The entire scene when Usnavi asks Vanessa out (or Sonny does it for him...LOL) is so different. (but much better now)
haha yeah, i actually think its funny how awkward he is and everything but I like the change a lot, it's better for the show as a whole. And we get to see his awkwardness anyway at the club w/ that girl.

Saw it on Saturday night.... AND I LOOOOVED IT!! The set was amazing. I was sitting in the 3rd row and just sat there with my mouth open (like an idiot) staring at it for like 10 minuets! As soon as I heard the music coming from Graffiti Pete's boom box I just felt happy (Seth was on for that performance btw)! Lin was adorable... just a wonderful performance. He had the audience in the palm of his hands from "hey y'all goodmornin'"! The opening number was great. Full of energy and passion... you could tell that everyone was so proud and happy to be up there. I thought "Breathe" was a wonderful song and was beautifully preformed. I almost started crying because I could totally relate to what Nina was going through. This show was so packed full of amazing performances. I thought that Mandy and Christopher had great chemistry.Their moments together felt real and sweet. Andrea and Janet were soo funny and were well used. A real standout to me was Robin... just wow... I was expecting a fun performance from him, and I got it, but he had some really strong emotional moments throughout the show that made his character REAL. I hope he gets a Tony nom. I really can't find a bad thing to say about the show. The second I left the theater I couldn't wait to go back and see it again.

And everyone was super nice at the stagedoor! Especially Lin, Christopher, Janet, and Robin! Robin actually asked me name and was very sweet... I felt kinda starstruck! lol

Ok, so I usually get super defensive when I read some of the more negative reviews of the show, especially the ones that just scream of prejudiced attitudes towards latinos and El Barrio (despite the fact that most of these asshats have never set foot there). But this bit, from The Advocate, actually made me laugh out loud:
It’s a far too sanitized portrayal of a neighborhood in decline -- where are the muggings, the rapes, the drug addicts? It’s a Pollyanna version of life in El Barrio.
Rapes? Plural? I really love the phrasing, cause it makes it seem like the reviewer actually *wanted* to see a few rapes in the show. Cause God knows a musical is never complete without a good old fashioned rape!
Ah, such insightful commentary on race relations in the US... How far we've come. Updated On: 4/14/08 at 08:14 PM
That is so ridiculous. The crime rate isn't really that high there... More s*** probably goes down is the "bad part" of my hometown in upstate! I think that it's one of those shows that has so much going for it that people try to dig for something wrong with it.

That is so priceless. Really, sometimes it's just nice to see a positive image when everything else in the media is portraying it as this dangerous place where people are all in gangs and such.
That was definitely laughable... thanks for sharing!
