I would like to publicly voice that I am horrified at the idea of a film version, and even if I could foresee circumstances in which it could be done well, it's way too soon to be having those discussions. Wait and see what the show's staying power is first before rushing into spending millions on a movie version of something most people don't even know exists.
While, yes it would be good to bring this show to wider audiences, to get a positive representations of latinos on film, etc etc I fear this has the potential to go the Rent route. I don't think it will translate well to film. Some of the things that make ITH so enjoyable are theatre specific, and would need to be retooled for film. And we know how well that usually turns out...And then there's the inevitable big name casting, changing the storyline, and who knows that other atrocities.
We turn movies into musicals, and then when something original comes along, we turn it into a movie, and in the process it almost always loses a little of its soul. Why can't we leave well enough alone? Why focus on making musicals accessible to the masses by turning them into something else, instead of finding ways to get more people to go to the theatre? Why can't theatre in itself ever be enough?
