I'm actually really relieved that The Pirate Queen got totally shut out. A nomination of any sort would imply that this musical deserves to live on when it really just needs to die a quiet and painless death so that the great cast can go on to do something that isn't complete tripe.
I'm a bit shocked that Company didn't get more nominations, but I'm hoping it will win all three for which it's nominated. If Esparza doesn't win, I may cry myself to sleep that night. OK, not really, but this is his time and the performance was amazing.
You don't see much physical similarities between Davie and Ebersole? I suppose them both being blonde and having similar features doesn't appear believable enough? That's very interesting...as Christine could defintely be Erin's mother visually. (or maybe I just have bad eyes!haha)
And vocally, they both have very forward sounds. Frankly, it's Davie that has one of the hardest jobs in the show...she has to recreate a period in Edie's life that ISN'T so documented. Ebersole has filmed footage to rely on. It is known that Little Edie wasn't always so far "out there". They WERE socialites...and although they had a very dysfunctional family, there needed to be some hint of that status when she was younger. Erin does a wonderful job of playing that naturally, she wears upper crust garb very well.
I was frankly a little surprised that her performance hasn't gotten even more buzz...considering the one that she replaced! From people that have seen the show recently, I've heard nothing but raves about Davie and her top knotch ability to handle such a flawed character. Many people, including members of the cast, have commented on how amazing they think Davie is...watching her transform into a younger version of Act II's Little Edie - including one person, Matt Cavanaugh, I believe, who made a comment that she even has little mannerisms and tiny details down. Erin watches the 2nd act nightly and seems to continue to add nuances that appear later on in Christine's performance. She's got some real acting chops - that are lacking with many other actresses her age. And I'm sure that Davie will get her due in the years to come.
Me thinks she's just being overshadowed by a mammoth named Ebersole. So, I'm having a little trouble seeing anyone's side that call her performance weak or lacking, haha. Just my opinion...
Of course I'm proud for SPRING AWAKENING and THE COAST OF UTOPIA. There were a few names up on that list I was surprised to see... And some names omitted that I thought sure would at least get a nomination (Lea Michele, for example) I'm surprised how many nods LEGALLY BLONDE got.
Why are people shocked Lazar did not get a nomination. What did he do that was new to the role. Just because you think he is cute or has a nice voice does not mean he is Tony worthy.
I am happy for LB. Yes, a Best Musical nomination be nice, but I would rather had the 7 noms, than nothing.
I am happy for SA and Gallagher especially, I though he was outstanding in the show.

I actually really like how it turned out! It looks good. I want Company to take all three. Pierce's part in Curtains just seemed like fluff, not worth an award, in my opinion. Yes, I know, "the Tony's like fluff!" but still! Esparza take a much buigger part with much more grace. I liked that Charlotte D'Amboise got nominated, too.

I'm with my2cents2. I found Davie to be fantastic. Her physically, the way she stands with her hand on her hip, the way she is constantly grabbing at her hair, her slightly slouched posture, made a great contribution to the believability of Edie's transformation. I saw the show this past Sunday after having seen it in January and marveled at how much she has grown into the role. Updated On: 5/15/07 at 04:09 PM
I thought Davie was excellent too. I could have seen her nominated. And I thought her later scenes in Act One showed the "bridge" going into what she would become in Act Two. And the accent came out when she got angry and upset, which I thought was an excellent acting choice. As if she'd been schooled to try to hide it (which I'm sure she had!), but when she got mad, it just naturally started to come out.
Loved that.
I think Wilson will win this award easily, though. It's SO deserved.

Wilson has it in the bag. End of story. When you have a moment like that moment after "Another Winter" you have to win a Tony. Christine Ebersole has plenty of moments like that in the show, so it's more than a given that she'll win too.

- AMEN. That moment was one of the most shocking experiences I've had in a theatre.
Also anyone else think Barbara Walsh may have a good chance at winning Drama Desk now that she didn't get the Tony nom? In 05 when Dennis O'Hare was snubbed by the Tonys for Sweet Charity, he won the Drama Desk. I hope it happens with Walsh! I'm sad her Joanne was overlooked for the Tonys.
I have to admit I'm really surprised Legally Blonde got a lot of nominations. The whole idea of a musical with the song "Omigod, You Guys!" being nominated for best score makes me die a little inside.
Besides that... I wasn't entirely surprised at the Les Mis- Pirate Queen snub. Bad a musical PQ seems to be, though, I guessed the cheoreography, set designs, costumes or Stephanie J. Block's performances would at least be recognized. I wonder what would have happened, though, if Lea Salonga was originally the revival Fantine. She was by far the best in the entire cast, and probably deserved a Tony nom if she was elgible.
Cosette: Roses are red.
Marius: Violets are blue.
Eponine: You're so in love!
Marius: And so not with you.
I was kind of expecting that both Ashley Brown and Lea Michele would have received nominations. I definitely would have put Ashley Brown and Stephanie Block ahead of Laura Bell Bundy. I thought Jason Tam would have garnered a nomination as well. I'm also surprised that the choregraphy for "The Pirate Queen" wasn't acknowledged.

I thought she was outstanding, and the transformation from Little Edie to Big Edie was completely believable.
Her voice was a bit harsh, nasal, forward, but often times beautiful. Perfect for a younger version of Ebersole's portrayal of Big Edie. Very nuanced physical interpretation of the character.
Wilson most definitely has this Tony in the bag. I also think that Gallagher has a very good shot at winning this Tony, and I'm very happy for him. He was the best actor in the piece.
Spring Awakening is flawed as a piece of theatre, but as a production, I find it bold, brave, refreshing, and innovative. I hope it gets recognized. With either a best Director win for Meyer, or best musical.
I think Grey Gardens as a piece of theatre is better than Spring Awakening, but it's production does not live up to the material, mostly due to the set.
I wasn't a big fan of the set, but it's just my opinion. I LOVED Grey Gardens, nonetheless.
Congrats to all the nominees and people behind each! I'm soo glad the PQ wasn't given any validation by nominations. I know that's harsh but it was crap.. Although, I have to say I thought it would get costumes and set nominations but hey what can you do. And LB for best score? Wow, that's all I can say... LBB won't win so we can't really bitch over her nod. And Orfeh won't win either...Mary Louise Wilson...just genius every night.

In regards to Omigod You Guys, it sounds terrible just listening to it but in the show it works. Same goes with most of the score. I thought it was serviceable and was performed with so much energy that it made it seem better than it was. I'm not sure that makes it worthy of a Tony nom, but I really did enjoy the show and the music.
I, too, hope that Mary Louise Wilson wins the Tony for best featured actress in a musical. She has devoted her life's work to the theatre and really deserves the award this year. I also would love to see GREY GARDENS win for best musical--it is great theatre, both entertaining and moving, and with an excellent score.
