The biggest oversight of all is no nomination for Mary-Mitchell Campbell for orchestrating COMPANY.
They weren't just throwing High Fidelity a bone. That set was more than deserving of a nomination. Don't crap on it if you didn't even see the show.
What non-nominated shows had Tony performances?

BIG got a performance after it was snubbed for a Best Musical nomination (a very controversial snub). They needed something that year because two of the nominated shows were closed.
Also - from the performance I saw Jonathan Groff totally deserved his nomination.
Agreed, Actr. Haven't seen The Pirate Queen (should I?), but choreography is totally about how it services the show and not just about pretty combinations of dance steps for no reason. If there's no reason for a dance break, why have it?

For what it's worth, I thought Ashley Brown was pretty mediocre as Mary... which is nothing short of a crime in that role. I agree with her "non-nomination."
I'm a little surprised that either Hibbert or Danielly didn't get a featured nod in Curtains, not that either one would have won.
I think Kristin Chenoweth's "no show" is a bit of snub, but it says mostly that people are very divided about her. They either love her to the point of nausea, or they wish she would fall off the planet, never to return.
For Best Musical, I think it's mostly a race between Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening, which isn't a surprise to me.
And I hope Grey Gardens "cleans up" at the Tonys.

But in a year when all four of the Best Musicals are still playing- and three out of the four Revival's are, why would they do that?
As do I Best12Bars! I was really hoping that it would get all the nominations that it did but in all honesty, I can't believe it really happened! Best orchestrations, lighting and costumes?! Awesome.
MARY POPPINS??
No Barabara Walsh or Heather Laws?
No Company for orchestrations?
These are awful.
I'm so dissapointed.
HUGE morning for SA and GG - work! .
And I don't recall a non-nominated show ever getting a performance. Certainly not in recent years.
Wow, you're right, Sleeper! How did I not notice that? I personally loved the orchestrations in Company. I guess it didn't make the cut, what with the two Original Score/Best Musical frontrunners and Jonathan Tunick.

I think this year's nominations are one of the best, it is going to be a great race for that award.

They really for the most part got it right this year. I am quite pleased.

That's a valid point - and I guess it probably won't happen due to time constraints. But I'm betting the producers will lobby hard for it, since it's the biggest B.O. grosser of the new musicals this year.
Legally Blonde's other option of course will be to create a commercial/clip to run during the Tony's. That would be $$$ expensive, but probably worth it.
I hope Grey Gardens wins a bunch of awards too!
I've heard many people tell me that Company sounded absolutely TERRIBLE. The whole actor/musician thing didn't work this time, and the music SUCKED because of it.
Just a hunch... But maybe that's why it didn't get nominated.

Exactly.
I too was really shocked by the oversight for the Company orchestrations. Very odd.
I also wanted Jason Danieley and Edward Hibbert to get nominated, but they didn't. This, in addition to no one from The Apple Tree and no actresses from Company getting nominated, is really disapponting for me.
But yay for Christine Ebersole, Mary Louise Wilson, and Karen Ziemba (even though the former two were a given)!

they're finally showing the nominations on CBS' The Early Show
Edit: it was about a 20 second clip. I don't know how it got the first listing in the TiVo header.

While I didn't think it sounded terrible, I do prefer a full orchestra as opposed to the minimalist revival. Songs like "Company" in my opnion sounded weaker than before. I didn't love the orchestrations of this revival.
i cant tell you how happy i am that both Laura Bell AND Debra were nominated for Tonys!
but um, Mary Poppins for Best Musical? im scared this might win
and GO GREY GARDENS! 10 NOMINATIONS! lets turn them into awards :)
Maybe the snub for Company orchestrations is a sign that people are really over the actor/musician gimmick, although I thought it was used brilliantly in Company.
I was also glad to see Dana Ivey recognized for Butley. That was a pleasant surprise.
i thought that actor/musician thing worked A LOT better in SWEENEY than in COMPANY
And in the end, the real winners are the sign companies who have had the "Recipient of *** Tony Nominations" signs all ready to go and are just painting in the numbers this morning even as the typesetters are adding those numbers to the advertisement layouts. Think of the money that PQ just saved on advertising...
I'm still disappointed that Chloe and Chico from LB weren't recognized, if only to have Taye Diggs read the nomination for Best Bi**h in a Musical. Of course, the competiton might still have been overwhelming
Congrats to all!
As opposed to the Sweeney orchestrations, which were just jarring because they were so empty, I could actually listen to the Company orchestrations.
If they were tired of the actor/musician "gimmick," they wouldn't have nominated John Doyle for Direction of a Musical. His direction IS the "gimmick," and I will say that it was wonderful direction.
