Very glad that Gavin Lee was nominated. I very much enjoyed him in Mary Poppins. And congrats to Raúl Esparza, Boyd Gaines & Eve Best. They weren't surprises but I was very glad to see their names up there. I am kind of surprised that Pirate Queen got a big fat 0 noms. (I mean even Lestat got 2 last year and Butley got one this time.) Though I had completely forgotten about it til now, so I guess that says something.
Wow this is the first year where I've seen almost everything nominated! I have to try and catch Curtains now.
I don't really think any of the girls of ACL merit nomination. They're all serviceable in their roles - what so special about them. The only one I could see getting a nom was Mara, but she has such a small role, although she's an audience favorite.
Really happy Curtains got a nom. Such a good show.
Blonde for Book and Score? Bizarre. Christian Borle? Apparantly nose-singing and under-acting gets you a Tony nom these days.
Thank God Ashley Brown didn't get nominated just for being Mary Poppins. She's doing a very bland job at the New Amsterdam and I'm glad the Tony Nominations reflected that.
People, I think we can say goodbye to Legally Blonde. Without a Tony performance to perhaps pump in more of the 14 yr old set, it may fade away by the end of the summer.
I had such high hopes and was very very let down. Too bad. Jerry Mitchell--either go back to choreography or perhaps try tackling a revival of a musical already standing the test of time.
It's interesting that Laura Michelle Kelly wins the Olivier Award as Best Actress for Mary Poppins in London, and Ashley Brown doesn't get a nomination for a Tony.

Can anyone beat Angela in her "congratulations for coming back to Broadway in a dreadful play patently unworthy of your talents but we are citing you anyway because you are a goddess-legend" nomination?
"Hurry up and get into your conga clothes - we've got to do something to save this show!"
Bill T Jones IS MOST DEFINATELY one of the biggest names in modern dance, and I totally love his stuff and respect his other work. But, to nominate him over Pirate Queen is just wrong. I understand that Pirate Queen is not a good show, but the choreography is actually one of the two best this season. Oh well.

Angela could most certainly take this thing home...we'll see.
I am happy for LB and SA they deserve them. It does not suprise me though that even though they got book and score that it did not get best musical. I am feeling it was neck and neck with curtains.

Best- Laura Michelle Kelly did AMAZNIG in that role- she took Mary away from the nice/sweet Mary and made her a stricter colder Mary, which is something that the London Audience accepted. I don't know how well that would go over here- to have a strict/cold Mary. But in London she did not hold back at all- while here you can tell that Ashley is trying to keep the part somewhat sweet.
Mary Poppins for Best Musical? The hell? I mean, I enjoyed it for what it is, it's a cute show, but Best Musical? I'm baffled by that one. The only logical explanation I can come up with is that a Mary Poppins performance on the Tonys will bring in more tourists and more $$ to NYC. Very weird. I'm glad Gavin Lee got a nod though, he is excellent.
I really need to see Spring Awakening before the Tonys now.
Performance by the set of High Fidelity! Brilliant idea! Let's petition for it to be in the Tonys lineup. A performance by Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson might be a tough act to follow, but I think the set of High Fidelity could do it.
Only a few disappointments: Coram Boy not nominated for best play, all of the Legally Blonde nominations, esp. Laura Bell Bundy, no nod for Lea Michele, no nod for Hugh Dancy, didn't care for Radio Golf at all, my favorite, no nod for Barbara Walsh, Jonathon B. Wright (not a surprise, just a disappointment) not nominated...
Surprises for me were the lack of nominations for A Moon For The Misbegotten, Eve Best is the only nominee; John Cullum's nomination for 110 In The Shade; Boyd Gaines in the lead not featured category (Hugh Dancy should have gotten a lead actor nomination); Ashley Brown and Kristin Chenoweth were not nominated

i think Mary Poppins got the nomination by default. everyone was so iffy about Legally Blonde and LoveMusik that they just went with something else they knew they weren't going to vote for.
i honestly think that's why a LOT of the people are listed. so people won't vote for them and they'll give it to whom they want to win.
Rotel, I was just about to say that. I just went back and re-read the nominees, and I saw the one for the set for Spring Awakening. WHAT???? I mean, Pirate Queen, Legally Blonde, and Curtains all had better sets, and I HATED Curtains. Not that it really matters, the award goes to Mary Poppins.
1. Pirate Queen got no noms because, had the committee given it just one nomination, it would have forced all the Tony voters to see the show. That's it - it was a mercy snub for the voters. High Fidelity was closed, so they could throw it one bone.
2. I think Legally Blonde's score & book noms are category fillers - the most worthy of what was left. I think they are fine.
3. I wouldn't count out Legally Blonde for a live perf just yet - it has happened before where a non-nominated musical got a performance.
4. I think Bill T. Jones totally deserved the choreography nomination. Choreography is more than just steps and jazz hands. The movement of those kids totally expressed their inner lives in an extremely exiting way - a wonderful part of the show. Just think of the beginning of "The B***h of Living."
5. I think they gave Coram Boy too many noms - also I don't agree with the O'Byrne nomination. There were too many strong contenders for him to be there - he was one of the least impressive actors in Coast of Utopia.
How the hell did Mary Poppins get a nomination? And Jon Groff?
And why wasn't ERIN DAVIE nominated? Charlotte D'Amboise over hr? You have to be kidding me.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
The choreography nomination shouldn't just be about who has the coolest choreography, but also about integration. Was the step dancing in Pirate Queen really integrated, or was it just simply there to bring in the Riverdance crowd. The dancing should serve the story and not just be a pretty adornment to the production.
