Is anyone surprised LoveMusik wasn't on the list for best new musical? I still haven't seen it, so it's hard for me to say. But I was just really shocked about that.
"What a mystery this world. One day you love them and the next day you want to kill them a thousand times over." The Masked Bandit in THE FALL
This is the first time I've been able to see a show before the Tonys, so it'll be fun watching the awards and being able to root for a show I've seen and loved.
I'm shocked that PQ didn't get recognized at all (even though I can never get those 2.5 hours of my life back) -- even for choreography! Even Hi-Fi got a nod. Strange.
Legally Blonde got WAY more nominations than I expected. It'll be interesting to see how many they actually win. IMHO, I don't expect LBB to win, cause she has a lot of great competition.
I did also notice that The Pirate Queen didn't get any nominations. I wasn't expecting them them to get many but I thought at least they would get a nod for sets and costumes.
"You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" - Betty Parris to Abigail Williams in Arthur Miller's The Crucible
I'm not terribly shocked with these nominations, but The Pirate Queen not getting a single nod is really... surprising. Costume design, at the very least, was worth a nod.
I'm still confused about Spring Awakening for best choreography. I love the show and I'm routing for it at the Tonys but the choreography was barely there and nothing too special.
And I must say, I'm really glad that High Fidelity got a nomination for its set. I enjoyed the show but I thought that, with its incredibly short run, it had no chance especially against the incredibly strong shows this season. That was definitely an incredible set and I'm glad its up there.
Well, I'm thrilled "The Little Dog Laughed" got recognized in two major categories, and I'm especially happy about White's nomination. She was brilliant.
I'm also glad "Legally Blonde" was recognized, but 7 nominations? "Mary Poppins", too: I would much rather have seen "Company" and "A Chorus Line" grab more nominations, because I think they were more deserving. (Yes, I know, revival vs. original, but I'm talking about the other categories.)
But yay, "Curtains"! See, I knew that show would be brilliant!
ETA: Yay for the "High Fidelity" nod; I didn't see it, but from the music and word-of-mouth I'd heard it didn't deserve to be trashed.
But wait. What!? What is Charlotte D'Amboise doing with a nomination!? Were they on something when the saw ACL? Did they just skip the show and listen to the CD? What?

yeah orfeh and charlotte should def be taken out and replaced with Erin Davie and someone from company....and even though I love Rebecca Luker, her part was sooooo dull in Mary Poppins....i'd take her out and replace another woman from Company (not sure who...i loved all of them so much) or Jessica Lee Goldyn from A Chorus Line!
Congratulations to Spring Awakening, Grey Gardens, and Charlotte d'Amboise!
I wish that ACL and Company had gotten more nominations, but oh well. I'm also REALLY surprised that LoveMusik isn't in for Best Musical. I haven't seen it, but I still expected it to be there.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

I fear the very fabric of the universe will start to unravel when they read the "best actress in a musical" nominations on June 10th and we have to see Laura Bell Bundy's face right before Christine Ebersole's.
"I have got to have some professional music!" - Big Edie
'EDIT: SOOOO happy that Cheno didn't score a nod!! YES!!!'
Well she has her TV series now..so you won't have to worry about her doing anything she could be remotely nominated for now..oh except maybe an Emmy...which beats a Tony any day.

High Fidelity's sets were wildly creative and are the ONLY thing about that show worthy of a nomination!
I am completely and utterly shocked that Chenoweth was shut out! She owned every moment of that show. Quite sad, because he performance was certainly better reviewed than LBB and Debra Monk.

I think one major consideration for Spring Awakening's choreography is that Bill T. Jones crafted it. Jones is quite highly regarded in modern dance circles, and if I am not mistaken, this marked his first legit Broadway credit. At least, that's my guess as to why the show got a nod for choreography.
Yeah I was also very surprised that Kristen Chenoweth didn't get nominated.

"Charlotte d'Amboise nominated...there is NO god."
Hah, the ONLY thing that shocked me to read was that she got nominated and then when I realized 5 seconds later that Walsh was missing from the list, completely surprised.
I can't believe PQ wasn't nominated for anything- I haven't seen it, but am still surprised. And Orfeh over Erin Davie? REALLY? That just doesn't make sense.
