Disappointed about no Featured Actress nomination for Company, but congrats on Actor, Revival and Director. Very surprised that d'Amboise was nominated, but that seems like the obligatory Chorus Line nomination -- I hope that's not a setup to justify giving it Best Revival, but I could see it working that way.
I'm pleased with the set nomination for High Fidelity. It really was remarkable.

I thought the symbolism of Bobby not being a part of the "orchestra" was brilliant.
I can't really offer my own opinion of Company, since I didn't see it. So I can only tell you what friends have said. Some also loved it (to be fair).
I can tell you that I don't think the actor/musician thing worked "musically," based on the cast recording... if for no other reason than they aren't very good musicians, frankly. And it shows on every song I listened to. They "get by" but that isn't good enough for Broadway, IMO.
i know it got terrible reviews, but THE PIRATE QUEEN shouldve at least been nominated for Choegraphy!
sheesh

The Les Miz revival didn't get any.
I thought it was brilliant as well. If Company wins, I think I will recover from Sweeney not winning last year. Company certainly feels like a winner to me.

At least Pirate Queen can't lose any Tony Awards. They might as well put a sign on the marquee that says "Open House"
As much as I loved the concept of Company, I prefer my musicians in the pit if for no other reason than it's hard enough for me to become a triple threat. I don't want to have to make myself a quadruple threat by learning to play the tuba!
ETA: When Bobby sits down at the piano and begins to play "Being Alive"... just... magical.
Nope, Neddy, and it didn't deserve any nominations. It's basically the same show with worse orchestrations.

Well, Actr, that's why I'm hoping it doesn't tire out too quickly! Pick me, pick me! Haha.

The actor musician idea worked better for COMPANY, more specifically in "Side By Side"/"What Would We Do Without You?". The fact that each couple would play their own little tune together, and Bobby had no one to play back to him really showed how the instruments fit together. David and Jenny seemed to have a "his and hers" type thing going on.
It seemed like Doyle expanded the idea of matching the instruments to the roles a whole lot more. The only way that really fit into Sweeney was that Johanna and Anthony both had cellos. Sweeney was more like "Look at us! We can play the instruments and sing the songs and act! We are INNOVATIVE!".
I'm going to try to see Grey Gardens and LoveMusik the week before the Tonys if possible. It sucks that I don't absolutely love this season and am totally rooting for one to win for Best Musical like I was last year.

I think it's pretty clear that Best Musical is between SA and GG. SA had the best overall reviews, so I expect it to win, along with best score. I also think it was the best directed musical this year.
I am happy Groff was nominated, I cant think of an actor I'd put in that slot.
and Bill T. Jones completely deserved his nomination. I'm surprised by the set design nom for SA, but glad it the lighting was recognized.
And add me to the pile of D'Amboise disappointment...She deserved one more for Carrie in 1988, imo.
I would have liked to have seen some of the performances from Les Mis get nominated, but I can't blame the nomination committee from leaving it out. It's hardly a revival.
Gemignani, Norm Lewis, and Lazar were wonderful though.
That's true, I wouldn't have minded Aaron Lazar being nominated. He was good. If only they made some exception for Lea Salonga...

if anyone in LES MIS was to get a nomination, i would say Celia shouldve.
"Side By Side"/"What Would We Do Without You?" was definetly another brilliant moment for the actor/musician concept.
I also quite enjoyed the "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" saxophone battle.
I would have loved to see Daphne nominated just so I can see how people would react to it.

Also no nomination for Hal Prince.
Who are they honoring this year?
What makes Mary-Mitchell Campbell's orchestration so genius is that she updated a tinny 70s score and stripped away the organ and other dated instruments. She took a complicated piece of music (as all Sondheim is) and made it sound brilliant.
It's not about whether the actor-musicians played it well the night you saw it; it's about HER work as an orchestrator. To overlook this is really stupid.

Oh and it turns out a few of us were right about McMartin. Looks like the Tonys really don't like him much after all.
i just realized...how the heck did Jon Groff get a leading actor nomination?
At least Legally Blonde wasn't nominated for Orchestrations.
I still can't believe no Hugh Dancy. And Jon Groff for actor? He really deserves a TONY for that role?
Wow. Mary Poppins. That's crazy. Great group of best actors, though.
Susan Hilferty is a brilliant designer but a nom this year over Pakledinaz is just absurd.
Sleeper, I totally agree. I love the chamber orchestra sound she created. Brilliant musical direction as well.
When I saw Grey Gardens I didn't think John McMartin was doing anything that merited a Tony Award or nomination. I actually thought he was a character the show could have done without. Of course, without him, there shouldn't be an Act 1. Well, actually, there's a thought...
I did enjoy Act 1 for Bob Stillman's piano playing, though. Keep that.
