My story was attempting to be about the expectation of dance in our industry when it comes to gender. Women are still expected to be incredible dancers, and new leading roles are being written that align with that expectation, but a song and dance man role is a fading art, and leading male roles no longer require the same dance experience that men in an ensemble still require. Why is that? In context (and in hindsight), the clip is not the best example of my attempted point because the role doesn’t have to be a song and dance man! But just the clip, and the way the number is staged, for me, did frustrate me that expectations seem different now."
