Tina-The Musical to Play the Lunt-Fontanne 11/19!

I'm excited for this one. Adrienne's "River Deep Mountain High" is so good. Plus unlike Cher and Donna Summer, Tina Turner actually has a really interesting and deep backstory to her life.

Okay. So Cher has had a six decade career full of highs, lows, and reinvention in the face of being a tough independent industry woman when it was still dominated by men.

Donna Summer also had an interesting career, but her show did her a major disservice by condensing her career into 100 minutes and making poor choices of how to tell her story in that time frame.

I did have some of your feelings initially when I saw ON YOUR FEET, Gloria Estefan’s show years ago, but ultimately, each of these diva’s stories have different meanings and enjoyment for different people. Tina Turner certainly lived a well-documented life of struggle and stardom, but there would still be someone who would say that it might not say it would make interesting theatre because it might focus too much on one aspect (her abuse history). I’ve wanted a Tina musical for a long time so I’m excited.

My bad, homie. From what the shows presented, their lives didn't seem as hard or interesting as Tina's but of course you cant show everything in 2.5 hours. And that also is just subjective to the storyteller.

I 100% agree with you on Gloria Estefan, tho. At least it was a fun show.

What's Love Got To Do With It is such an iconic movie. I know growing up, it was always on in my house. Plus, I do think this show is going to bring even more people from the black community into theatre so I'm uber excited about that.

The book is a bit messy, but this show paints Ike Turner with basically not a single redeeming quality or charm. In "What's Love Got To Do With It," Lawrence Fishburne had charm to go with Ike's evilness. But, since Ike is dead, this show feels free to delete any positives - few as they may be. I have no idea what the truth is - but this time Tina Turner doesn't hold back in the depiction of Ike.

My favorite scene was the recording of River Deep Mountain High with Phil Spector (who in London was played a little creepy knowing what we know about what happens with Spector much later on - unrelated to Tina). And the final scene change was breathtaking. I also recall that there was a request to not sing along during the show!

Donna Summer did have an interesting backstory, but the book chose to ignore those aspects of her life. If you blinked, you would have missed the drug use and the sexual abuse, that the book briefly focused on. What I found really messy with the book is, as a club dj and fan, there were multiple mistakes made in the book, when certain songs were released and when they were popular. But I still enjoyed Summer. How could you not, with those fantastic songs. I do want to do some research on Gloria's back story. Unless I forgot it, I am unaware of backstage Miami Sound Machine issues.

I enjoyed Summer, The Cher Show, and On Your Feet so I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

I think they're saying that there's so many biographical musicals on Broadway right now, that something has to close (or be closing soon), which isn't the case.
