SHUFFLE ALONG is a New Musical! Also all four men will be eligible in the Featured Actor category...which I find somewhat shocking.

Wow....I thought for sure Brian Stokes Mitchell and Brandon Victor Dixon would be Lead while Billy Porter and Joshua Henry would be Featured.

Thank goodness it isn't considered a revival...that would've been category fraud for sure.

So the only eligible leading performance from Shuffle is Audra? Strange.

And glad that it's a new musical- there was no cogent argument to be made for it as a revival.

Now I can't help but wonder if they'll shut out SHUFFLE from the Best Musical race just to prove a point (like they did when ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS wanted to be considered a Revival - and then was omitted from Best Play).

Had a feeling it would have to go that way. Sorry this did not happen last year. Oh well, as they say, it is great to be nominated. Looks like nothing for Audra this time around.

As with any show, eligibility is based on opening night credits unless otherwise ruled.

GIven that all five of the leads in SHUFFLE ALONG are above the title, and the four men were petitioned down to Featured Actor, that leaves Audra (unstated) as the only eligible lead.

Between SHUFFLE ALONG and HAMILTON, Featured Actor In A Musical is going to be a bloodbath.

I think most of the men in Shuffle Along will be left out. They have way less to do than the men in Hamilton.

Agree with the decision and agree that the Shuffle men will mostly get shut out.

If one of the Shuffle actors gets nominated, anyone care to guess who will it be?

I'd honestly take any musical of the season save Amazing Grace over School of Rock, but I guess it's likely.

 

I honestly think Audra should be supporting. It is an ensemble. Maybe the show has narrowed in around her since previews began.

From what I saw, Billy Porter might give Daveed (who had it in the bag in my opinion) a run for his money....and the Tony voters love him.

Yes! I was also hoping Paul Alexander Nolan would sneak in for BRIGHT STAR...but with all of the HAMILTON and SHUFFLE ALONG men in the category it seems very unlikely.

If Crazy For You and Nice Work if You Can Get it were considered new musicals, new books with ineligible scores, Shuffle Along should be considered a new musical as well. I think they made the right decision.

Granted, I haven't seen Shuffle Along, but based on buzz and reviews I don't think any of the men will beat out any of the Hamilton guys for the Tony.

I agree with IdinaBellFoster's Best Musical Predictions:

Hamilton

Waitress

Shuffle Along

School of Rock

And if we get a fifth nominee, it'll be American Psycho.

Agreed.  I have been listening to the cast recording and it reminds me of how great Paul Alexander Nolan's performance was.  Shuffle Along is the only major contender I haven't seen yet, but I think it will be hard for him to get in with all the men from Shuffle Along in featured.  I really think the best chances at nominations for Bright Star are Carmen Cusack and best score, but I'd like to see them get more.  The show exceeded my expectations.

I actually worry that Brandon Victor Dixon's chances just got shot.  With all four Shuffle Along men being in the same category instead of two and two, they might split ballot votes.  Other than Daveed Diggs and Christopher Fitzgerald, those other 3 spots are up for grabs.  I kinda think we'll see Paul Alexander Nolan, someone from She Loves Me (Creel most likely, but possibly Barasch), and either one more person from Hamilton or one person from Shuffle Along.
