The Front Page had most names above the title. Slattery's absence on the list implies he'll be considered as Lead Actor come award season.

Somewhat surprised Lane is supporting for Front Page. Yes, he doesn't show up until the end of the second act, but he absolutely dominates the proceedings from there on out, and I feel like most people would describe the play as built around the Hildy/Walter relationship. But a supporting placement certainly makes him a shoo-in for a nomination, perhaps even a win.

He's billed above the title already so he remains in Leading.

can someone explain to me why they had to specifically announce that Ben Platt would be eligible for a nomination as Leading Actor? I mean, it's pretty obvious from all the promotional material, the title of the show, his amount of time spent on stage etc,,?

His name is below the title.

I'm surprised by the surprise at Groban's placement. Even before the role was expanded, I would have made the same ruling: Pierre is the male lead of the show. A character does not need to be the focal point of all activity onstage for that character to be the lead.

Or for the actor to be considered lead. Yul Brynner, Scott Merrill, Sydney Chaplin, Tom Bosley, Theodore Bikel, Dick Van Dyke, Jerry Orbach, Mark Baker, Bill Hutton, Daniel Jenkins, Michael Cerveris, Brian d'Arcy James, Jo Sullivan, Carol Lawrence, Barbara Cook, Tammy Grimes, Chita Rivera, Melba Moore, Carlin Glynn, Wanda Richert, Mary Beth Peil, Alyson Reed, La Chanze, Daisy Eagan, Kate Levering...

But he now will prob win this category. At least has secured a nomination with this ruling. As should Harold Perrineau in The Cherry Orchard with this ruling. He appeared to be the lead of the show, opposite Diane Lane, but should be nominated for supporting.

Really stupid move to keep Josh as leading. When you consider his role as leading, it seems paltry. When you look back on his performance and consider it as featured, it is sublime.

Pierre is on stage the entire time and he has a story line and multiple scenes independent of Natasha. Not to mention his name is in the title. How is he not a lead role? There's a reason it's not Natasha, Anatole & the Great Comet of 1812.

Yeah I saw the show. I disagree.
As far as Josh Groban being leading, why would they want to advertise the small size of his role? It was obvious they wouldn't petition him as featured. Just a business decision.

Even if Perrineau does have a chance, there's still boatloads of competition to come for Featured Actor in a Play with Jitney, Oslo, The Play That Goes Wrong, Sweat, etc.

The show's focus is on both Natasha and Pierre. There's a reason the last twenty minutes are about them to the point of excluding nearly every other character.

When I saw the show I was expecting him to have a much smaller role after everything I'd seen on the boards. To me his role seemed very much like a leading role. It feels to me like Act 1 is more focused on Natasha and Act 2 more on Pierre, the impression I took away was that they had both featured in a similar way.

Sort of unrelated, but I wonder if In Transit will be eligible for Orchestrations? There's no Tony for vocal arranging, but this is unprecedented. I doubt it'll get nominated for anything else, but I could definitely see an argument for it getting recognized in this category. Can singers count as an orchestra here?

I would guess that they will not be eligible. In Transit was one of the shows included in this latest round of eligibility determinations, and that seems like it would have been addressed if it was being deemed eligible for a nomination in that category, especially since it would have meant not being "consistent with opening night billing."

I full agree and feel like Nathan Lane should be in Lead Actor contention for The Front Page, not Featured. Despite showing up during Act 2, his character seemed to be the focal point of the otherwise ensemble piece. Both he and Slattery were co-leads but I'd say Lane felt more Lead while Slattery felt more Featured. The true standout of The Front Page that should be in the Featured category for his performance is Jefferson Mays. Up against Lane, I don't even know if he'll land the nomination.
