Adam Pascal. Born in 1970 which would put him in his 37th year, three years away from the big 40. Mr. Rapp is one year younger so is only four years to the big 40.
Rent from Wicipedia: ...the musical centers on a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Alphabet City in the last days of the Bohemian East Village, under the shadow of AIDS.
For the record, Jonathan Larson was thirty-five when he died, and he was still a struggling artist, living through a lot of the things portrayed in the show. So it's not impossible that the characters COULD be older than the generally accepted early-to-mid-20s. I can't tell if the problem here is that people are up in arms because they actually ARE older than the assumed age of these characters, so therefore they're automatically too old to play 20s, or if people really think the characters HAVE to be in their 20s. The issue to me is still not that they LOOK old, but that since people are aware of their ages, they get stuck harping on it.

By the time one hits almost 40, they should not be camping out in an apartment trying to live for free unless they are truly one of the permanent homeless people. In that case, they should seek help to find permanent housing. "Rent" is about young people and, sadly, close to 40 does not make you young. You are firmly in middle age and that is the sad truth. My point is that the show is about young people and young people should be playing the roles. There must be some actor/singers out there who are the right age for the part and Anthony and Adam should be looking for roles closer to their own ages.
i always here this "oh they are to old" and is pissing me off
People who were struggling artist etc back then were not aged a certain age.
They could have been 16 under to 60 so why are they to old?? at what point in Rent does it mention anyones age except Mimi's??
I never said almost forty was young. I said that it's not impossible to be at that point in your life in your mid-30s. It might be sad, but Rent is somewhat period now, and at that point, it wasn't unrealistic. It's about whether or not they look it, not how close they are to their ages -- why do you think so many actors are eager to conceal their ages? Because they don't want to be limited by how old they actually ARE, but rather judged on how they look. Honestly, I think you're conflating what you seem to find to a pathetic career choice for actors who are middle-aged with whether or not they can do believable work in a show.We see what we want to see.

We see what we want to see.
That is so true! I hope you agree that it applies to both sides of the discussion.
My point is that the show is about young people and young people should be playing the roles.
People continually ask this question, and you continually evade it. There have been PLENTY of recent and not-so recent replacement cast members who are well out of your definition of "young," and yet you don't seem to be going on about the problem unless it pertains to the OBC.
I hope you agree that it applies to both sides of the discussion.
Yes, I do. I was ten years old when Rent opened on Broadway. I was never ABLE to see them take on the roles in full force, and because this is literally a dream come true, I'm willing to put the things that could be quibble-worthy aside and not let them overshadow what a wonderful opportunity this is to see something really special.

It's hard for me to think someone with "LuvtheEmcee" as a screen name is unbiased when it comes to Adam Pascal.
Of course. It's a bias I've had since I was like fourteen -- it's practically in my blood! I don't think I've EVER tried to deny or hide that. I have no reason to, and I am completely forthcoming about it.
Really?? I always thought it was because you had a Alan Cumming obsession. Ya learn something new every day!
It's not really just because of Adam. I'm totally fascinated by the character. If I had been creating a username as homage to Adam, I don't think I'd have picked Cabaret! The "of course" was in response to the idea that I'm obviously not unbiased.

A very interesting and candid Q&A with Adam about his return to the show, his upcoming prospects, and his feelings on the film.
lol, I was joking around. But I do agree about the character, and thanks to things like youknowwhere, I've gotten to see a few glimpses of several peoples interpretations. I was a little sketchy about Adam, but he really nailed the role!
I think I wouldn't be as opposed to the negative opinions if this were an open ended run, but it is only 6 weeks. Let fans live out their dreams and then all will go back to normal.
... he wanted to play the PHANTOM? Oh my.
that was a great article! haha, Em, I had that same reaction about Phantom. Billy Flynn he had talked about before.
Of course every time I see the first photo they used, I picture Craww's interpretation, lol!

Good article, but the Phantom? Oh, Adam.
I certainly never heard the "Phantom" thing before. Hm.
I'm excited. If the interview is any indication, Pascal is in a good place right now. All reservations aside, I'm so glad I'll have this opportunity to see them. Take it or leave it, but the premises of the Pascal/Rapp return aren't the important thing at this point. Now it's all about enjoying a special set of circumstances.
Adam Pascal wanting to play the phantom made me laugh.
I'm glad Adam's happy with his life, and to come back and be in Rent again. All I have to say is:
Welcome back, Adam and Anthony!
I look forward to seeing them, less then a month from now.
I'm with emcee, I was only 6 when the show premiered on Broadway and it has been my dream since I saw the show for the first time (8/7/04) to see OBC members. I'll be at the show on 8/13 (2 weeks from today!), so it's like a 3 year anniversary for me - my 7th time seeing the show in 3 years.
I'm just impressed that they've barely aged in 12 years, and incredibly happy about the opportunity to see them.
You just made me feel really old.
Emcee
i hate to tell ya ,but there is last minute switch. yes, it's going to be harvey firestein, and carol channing doing rent now. the producers wanted to bring in a older audence.
Adam Pascal wanting to play the phantom made me laugh.
I'd probably enjoy him more that I did Gerard Butler.
