Actors from closed musicals don't win Tonys - a simple but unfortunate fact (plays are a different story)

The 77th Annual Tony Award Nominations for 2024 Jun 5
2024, 08:57:20 AM
I haven't seen a ton of talk about what's going to win the design categories. It doesn't feel like a year where one play/musical sweeps everything, so how do we think those categories are gonna go?

WAY TOO EARLY 2023 Tony Award Predictions Mar 30
2023, 03:09:26 PM
One thing is for certain, and that's that I don't think any of the Into the Woods actors are winning. Voters are really allergic to awarding actors from closed musicals - the last one to do it was Martin Short for Little Me way back in 1999. I remember when plenty were predicting Sharon D. Clarke last year, and this rule still held true.

Best & Worst Best Book of a Musical Tony Winners? Mar 29

I truly believe Into the Woods has the best book in all of musical theatre.
Memphis is a bad winner but that year was, famously, ROUGH

I’m predicting this exact thing. I don’t feel good about it but it’s too late to change it now!

2022 Tony Awards Predictions Apr 27
2022, 08:48:41 PM
While Clarke obviously feels like a winner, I just can't shake the fact that Tony voters hate voting for performances from closed shows - the last one to win was Martin Short for Little Me all the way back in 1999. So I think it's probably Lenk, although Kalukango stands a good chance if voters don't mind voting for a great performance in a mediocre show.

Featured Actress -Musical 2019 May 2

Gray seems like a pretty easy way to reward the cast as a whole, and I feel like she'll get caught up in the kind of sweep that the Tonys love to do lately.

Tony Awards 2018 Winner Predictions Thread May 5
2018, 05:03:55 PM
As long as SpongeBob wins as few Tonys as possible, I'm happy. ANYWAY. Best Director of a Musical almost always goes to the winner of Best Musical or Revival (only 3 times this century has that not been the case). That being said, I wouldn't be too surprised if Musical went to BAND'S VISIT, Revival went to MY FAIR LADY, and Director went to ONCE ON THIS ISLAND.

And no one who saw it will every forget the phone sex production number or the prostitutes heading to Washington DC in their Bob Mackie outfits or Siegfred and Roy being played by a single person or all that neon or the live horse or the not so now far fetched plot point of Miss Mona becoming president."

NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 Previews Oct 21
2016, 09:11:07 AM
I gotta say, I'm just glad that the biggest issues people have with the show have little to do with the seating/sight-lines. When I heard that this was going to be an environmental production staged in a traditional Broadway house, I got nervous.

Thanks for the great post! What specifically was this lighting effect you mentioned, if you don't mind shari
