Passing Strange-62.6% this week, 50.8% last week, this will not make it past this August
Cry Baby-64.4% this week, 55.7% last week, this will probably close in the fall

musicaltheatrefan3--didn't you give every show on Broadway like 3 more years about a week ago. That same week when you told us you were leaving?

In that same thread, he said that WICKED would be open for over 20 more years....

and now he has Emma Zaks as his avatar.

I didn't realize he was being serious when he said that he is seeing a therapist. Makes sense now.

i get the sense that logic isnt your strong point, but do you see that Passing Strange is playing in a smaller theater and with HIGHER ticket prices, and a SMALLER cast/set/orch, so it costs less to run...

whereas CryBaby is playing to a LARGE theater with LOWER ticket prices (unheard of low...) and with a HUGE cast/production etc..

I think Xanadu will be around for awhile. it appeals to many people and plus it has been running longer than any of the shows that were nominated.
The shows that could possibly have a short life remaining on Broadway are:
Passing Strange
Cry Baby

i think every producer is "waiting and seeing"
thats broadway.

xanadu is going to be fine.
plus the chicago production opening, the national tour and the london production.
best musical or not, we KNOW who really deserved the award... (xanadu! of course)

PS i think wont last long....the performance didnt help it.

ITH will enjoy heightened ticket sales for a month or 2 then it will die off.

first to close, i think, PS or CB

My only fear with Xanadu is getting through July. Cheyenne was the undeniable star of the cast performance Sunday and he's going to be gone the entire month.

If the show can get through a month of potentially disappointed new customers expecting to see him and getting Curtis instead (no disrespect intended), I think it'll be OK.

Hopefully newcomers will just fall in love with the whole show, but after a performance like that....

I don't really think the PS performance helped and it will be gone by the end of the summer, maybe last to the end of the year. Xanadu won't do to good because I don't think people were really aware that it was a joke. Cry Baby will stay open for a while. And ITH will have great ticket sales for a long time. They did great yesterday alone and the next week is sold out (pre Tony sell out)

Musical theater fan. You're totally mis-reading the grosses. It is not about percentage of the house, it's about average ticket price and the amount of money they gross for the week. If you give away all your tickets and everyone shows up, you would have 100% but no money. Cry Baby has been giving away hundreds of comps a week. Those tickets say $0.00 so they drive down the average sale price. So even though it posts numbers in the 50 and 60% range, it's probably only about 30 or 40% that actually purchase tickets. I expect this show to announce a closing this week, and for the show to be gone by early to mid july.

^ Exactly. Their average ticket price has gone DOWN pretty consistently. And have they broken 300K in one week yet? I don't think so. I've also heard from a few people that the papering services can't even give the tickets away. Ouch!!

A good friend of mine got 150 tickets (comped!) two weeks ago for a single performance.

Wow.

But what I meant was that they are having trouble getting people to take them. Seems a lot of people don't even want to see it for free. Not that they're not allowed to give them away.

Whoever said In The Heights - they did a million dollars in advance sales since the Tonys. And Xanadu has had decent sales all along and it doesn't cost as much to run. Sadly I have to agree with A Catered Affair.

XANADU should pull out a kick-ass ad campaign a la Cubby for the show itself...it's such a fun show and if the word was spread around a little better about it, it could be a real hit. It's not a hard theater to sell out but every damn show that goes in there ends up doing less than satisfactory at the Box Office...

CRY-BABY will not last much longer...it's a huge theater and it will most definitely be open for a new show next season to take...the Marquis is just too big a theater with too perfect a location to leave with a flop like CRY-BABY running in it.

A CATERED AFFAIR is doing exceptionally well, despite it's Tony shutout. It's a hit with the matinee ladies and will stick around for quite a while. It's relatively cheap to produce and I'm sure it will make a profit. It should be a modest success.

PASSING STRANGE is a really hard sell and the terrible Tony night performance and no on-air wins will obviously not help matters. Again, everything that goes into the Belasco is usually a flop...weird. It won't last past Labor Day.

IN THE HEIGHTS, GYPSY, SOUTH PACIFIC, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, GREASE, THE LITTLE MERMAID, and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN all have nothing to worry about...yet.

End of story.

A catered affair has a couple more months in it i think, its box office has been pretty steady especially for a show which was overlooked at the Tonys.

Xanadu i also think will pull through to around October
Legally Blonde i think will easily play out the year, especially since its grossing over half a million every week and selling more tickets than most Broadway shows.

Cry Baby and Passing Strange on the other hand i think will both be gone in the next few months

Oh and so will Spring Awakening

I don't think SPRING AWAKENING will be gone in the next few months....

AVENUE Q on the other hand should be gone come Winter. And LEGALLY BLONDE should show some potential once the winner of the reality show is picked. And then very quickly start to decline in ticket sales. It should last until February or so.

Spring Awakening has been dying a death for months, i have a feeling they will pull the plug and focus on the tour and the UK premiere

As I stated here on other threads, last month, "all of this seasons new musicals will be gone by this time next year".
Well, maybe In The Heights will be around until Sep 09.
Still, a pretty crappy season.

Oh well.

I think A CATERED AFFAIR, AVENUE Q, PASSING STRANGE, and XANADU wil be gone by December 31st.

And I also think MERMAID has a few good years left. It's in the top 5 consistently when it comes to sales.

Okay first off if any show was closing that soon there would have been a press release already. Also you can still buy tickets for shows past that date so I don't think any of these shows are closing on Sunday.

I'm not starting a new thread but Carly Jibson just posted a bulletin on myspace saying that the show is indeed closing on Sunday, June 22.

Per Carly:

"So, some of you may have heard, some of you may be hearing this for the first time. But I thought I would post a bulletin so that I could at least give you the info from the horses mouth.

After our very short run at the Marquis theatre, Cry Baby will have it's final performance on this Sunday June 22nd 2008. We got our notice tonight when we arrived at the theatre that our show is closing. We are very sad about the news, as you could imagine. We are all so grateful to have been apart of all of the Tony excitement, and have been blessed to have entertained all the people we have. This news breaks my heart on a very personal level being that I have been a part of the project from the very beginning, I feel more than blessed to have worked on this project and make "pepper" come to life. I will never forget this project or this AMAZING cast of talented actors, producers and creators I have had the priviledge to work with. This week will be very hard but I just want to say that we are going out with a bang!!! I have chosen this life style and this is a hazard of the trade. I have all the faith in the world that I will land on my feet and book something wonderful soon.

Thanks for all your love and support!!!

CRY BABY FOREVER B******!!!

Carly"
