Angus McIndoe on 44th. It's right smack in the middle of the Theatre District next door to the St James. Good eats, good service, just a fun place to be.

Kodama Sushi.
Great sushi, great price, great location...45 and 8th. (They also have a full cooked menu.)
Bonus if you like to actor gaze: I don't think I've ever been there without seeing b'way actors...most prevalently between the matinee and evening show.
We went to dinner there closing night of Spring Awakening. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, which is a little secluded from the rest of the place. the table in front of us, had almost the enitre OBC of SA; someone from the current cast was in the corner, actors from Little Mermaid and In the Heights were seated at different tables as well.
With my kids we like to hit John's pizza on 44th....we both love their pizza but often order from the rest of the menu. One of my favorite foods is their roasted veggie platter. Delish. You do have to be careful about timing it right or the place is PACKED.
I really like Vynl, as well on 9th, between 50th and 51st. Noisy, but great food and atmoshere. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. Actually LOVE their b'fast!
Other than that, I continually try new places all over the city...too much to choose from!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Also before a show I always go to the Edison diner. It's in the Edison Hotel. It's simple and cheap and warm

Posted: 2/8/09 at 8:45amThe Chelsea Grill in Hell's Kitchen!! The owners also run the place next door which is also great; Riposo 46. They are on 9th Avenue between 46th & 47th. Great and inexpensive.

Cosi if we're in a hurry and want a bagel on the run. John's when we need a bite before a show. We've also hit Tout Va Bien on 51st--it's something like $15 for a three-course lunch. The Boeuf Bourguignon is really good (and huge). It's right around the corner from--I think it's the Hampton Inn in midtown. Blockheads is also inexpensive and good; split a chicken quesadilla one evening after we got into the city, thinking it would be a light bite before a bit of a walking tour and a show, and it was plenty for two.
And I have to give a shout-out to Mariebelle's. I'm not overly fond of their chocolates, but their dark hot chocolate (European style) is to die for, if expensive. The small was plenty; it's rich and warming and a totally decadent experience. I'd seen it on Food Network or someplace, so we headed there. A bit hard to find but really worth it. I bought a box of the hot chocolate to make at home but can never get it smooth like they do....
And now I'm hungry.

Posted: 2/8/09 at 9:54amEmpanada Mama, on 9th between 51st and 52nd. I miss it so much since I moved, I tried to make my friends FedEx me some food. Also, Buttercup Bake Shop. And my friends and I have a spcial place in our hearts for Dallas BBQ, but I wouldn't put it in the "must-go" category.

I second Vnyl on 9th Av, that place was fabulous.
Also, Two Boots pizza, in Grand Central and at Bleecker/Broadway in SoHo.
Unfortunately though, it seems like every time I really enjoy a meal in the city, I try and commit the intersection to memory and I never can remember it. Otherwise, I'd have a lot more to say!

I really like Victor's Cafe on 52nd near the Neil Simon theater. Great Cuban/Spanish food. They have this amazing chicken soup with noodles and avocado.

Gallagher's Steak House is also really good, I've only eaten there once, but the filet mignon there is amazing.
Carnegie Deli is also a good place to eat anytime.

Explorer, Becco is my favorite restaurant! That all-you-can-eat pasta is phenomenal!
I'll go to Cosi if I want something quick, and there's always pizza. Walk 2 blocks in any direction and you'll find pizza.

Get thee out of midtown! 
For sheer entertaining dining that you really won't find in too many other places, I recommend wd-50 in the Lower East Side (Wylie Dufresne's restaurant).
It's expensive and some...ok, MOST of the combinations are bizarre (parsnip tarts? sweetbreads in a beet-pomegranate sauce?), and the misses miss spectacularly, like the scallops in grape sauce that tasted like someone poured Welch's grape juice over my plate of scallops. But it's guaranteed to be a meal like none you've ever had before, and when the combos work, they are really wonderful. I still pine for the rabbit sausage and octopus cassoulet I had there. Truly.
I'll toss another coin in for Kodama, too, as I know I can always slip in there before a show for a couple of quality rolls and miso soup.

We have many, however, the last few that were really gems were:
Benoit, where Mrs R conversed in French with Alain Du Casse who is quite charming & whose picture is on her cell phone . For the uniniated, his restaurants include the Jules Verne atop the Eiffel Tower - in Paris & not Las Vegas and Petrossian where we dined last night. Great Vodka, caviar , and very attentive service.

The Hour Glass - 46th btwn 8th and 9th (Restaurant Row) way down almost to 9th on the north side of the street.
Cafe Un, Deux, Trois - 123 West 44th Street. lovely french cafe with lots of character and good food.
East of 8th - 23rd Street, south side, just east of 8th Avenue. Excellent food, excellent service and a block from the red line that will get you to Times Square in ten minutes. Great pre-theater restaurant.
Sarabeth's - 423 Amsterdam Avenue (at 80th Street) - Excellent breakfast!!!! But be prepared to wait for a table especially on the weekends. It's well worth it. The food and service are excellent.
Republic Noodles in Union Square, north west corner. EXCELLENT!
Ruby Foo's Chinese - it's a chain but the atmosphere and food are both excellent. There is a location in the Times Square area as well as one at 77th and Broadway. I hazard to guess there are others around the city.
Cornelia Street Cafe - Cornelia Street between Bleeker St. and West 4th St. EXCELLENT food and atmosphere. The have been around for a very long time and get consistently good reviews. WONDERFUL out of the way restaurant and a "must eat" destination.
