The one show that I can think of that EVERYONE seems to be praising here that I don't like is the current production of Gypsy. I am not a LuPone fan at all nor can I stand her singing. There were some great performances on that stage. I would say the best was Laura Benanti.
I also thought that YF was the very bad as well. I thought that the jokes fell flat and the score wasn't very good as well.
1. Mamma Mia!
2. Cats
3. Sunday In The Park With George
4. Beauty & the Beast
5. The Producers
Xanadu - only meant for a certain generation of people
Spamalot - all the same jokes from the movie and the new ones were cheesy
Parade - half of the shows music is so superfluous, it's ridiculous.
songanddanceman - shut your trap!!! You are a fan of LEGALLY BLONDE and RENT. that says it all right there....
wait no. not a fan. you are a schiller. you never shut your hole, when there's a chance to defend LB or RENT (mediocre overrated junk)
just stop and leave me alone! It's people like YOU that make me hate this crap even more.
Phantom
Titanic
Mamma Mia!

Im also a fan of Company, In The Heights, Sunday In The Park With George, Parade, West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, Misery, November, Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd etc, its called having diverse taste.
And i weren't even having a go at you before i was just saying that Rent did change theatre (which Fan of no fan is not exactly brain surgery, its fact)
How did Rent change theatre? I'm not being belligerent, as I do like the show, although I haven't been back to see it since 1996. I just see that claim made a lot about it and I'm interested as to the reasons why people think it was a groundbreaking show.
Further explanation to my question: looking at the past century of musicals, there are certain shows that stand out as groundbreakers. In brief, Show Boat, for its sweep, scale, subject matter; Of Thee I Sing, for its satire; Pal Joey, for having an anti-hero as its leading character; Oklahoma! for breaking with the style in which musicals were written; Gypsy and Fiddler on the Roof for totally integrated staging and models of the form of the modern book musical; Cabaret for combining the book musical with the concept musical; Hair as the first rock musical on Broadway; Company as the model of the Prince-Sondheim concept musicals; Chorus Line for total integration of book, score and staging; Cats (for better or worse) as the first of the international mega-musicals, where marketing triumphed over content. But what did Rent do that no other show had done before it?
Little Sally, I think its funny you dont like [TOS] but quote it in your signature.

Spring Awakening - But i have more personal history issues with the show than anything
Prodcuers - Yes, not a fan...I did like Young Frankenstein
Fantasticks - Sure it ran for ever, but I just can't care about it.
Anything Goes
Beauty & The Beast
Jesus Christ Superstar
RENT - It is nice to know I am not alone in this. I seriously thought I was the only person. I like the material that JL wrote but I thought the staging was awful.
WICKED - The only allure to that show was Kristin Chenoweth.
SPRING AWAKENING - I don't know...maybe because I got some I didn't find it relevant to me.
1. Working
2. The Secret Garden
3. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
4. Wicked
5. Spring Awakening (hey look! THIS is art! blah blah blah)
And, for those who put Sunday In The Park With George and The Light in the Piazza...are you CRAZY!?!?! It's a shame that they don't produce MORE shows like these in today's theatre. But maybe I'm biased because those two shows are definitely in my top ten list of favorite musicals...maybe my top five.

THE LION KING (A charming animated film which translated to the stage becomes an overproduced mediocrity)
RENT (Puccini's La Boheme relocated to a dramatic and musical garbage dump)
THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA (Proof that musical talent of Richard Rodgers' family seems to diminish with each generation.)
The phantom of the opera

I usually can find one good thing to say about each show, but I have the most trouble with:
Spring Awakening
Phantom of the Opera
A Catered Affair
"THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA (Proof that musical talent of Richard Rodgers' family seems to diminish with each generation.)"
Are you insane!?!
Phantom of the Opera
Wicked
Perhaps you failed to read the name of this thread...
"What are the top three worst shows you've ever seen that everyone else seemed to praise?"
You have a right to disagree as to the merits of THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, but to call someone insane just because they don't agree with your high opinion of the show is no cause to insult other people who do not agree. My opinion is an honest perception and my own and it is just as valid as yours, even though it is a minority opinion, which is the stated purpose of this thread.
My personal opinion based on seeing and hearing Light in the Piazza and other music by Adam Guettel, is that on his best day he is not one millionth the composer Richard Rodgers was on his worst day. But that's my opinion, which I admit is a minority one. I respect your right to disagree, a courtesy you have not shown me.
Dayao...thank you. Really.
Alright, calm down, calm down!
I wasn't, by any means, "insulting" you. I said "Are you insane?" as an expression. I obviously know it's your opinion and I did not mean to put you down.
Geesh! Calm down. People here can be so uptight...
