What kind of music do you or he listen to?
You looking for something fun, serious or what?
Have you seen any shows before and what?
Well I'm actually a musical theatre major (haha) so that's really what I mostly listen to.. but I just want something fun and light to go see.. My boyfriend isn't much of a theatre guy so I just want us to have fun and not waste our money... I've actually only gotten the chance to see two b-way shows:Wonderful Town and RENT. Suggestions?
When are you going? If after April 3rd, I suggest "Legally Blonde". You might also want to try "A Chorus Line", "Mary Poppins" or, since it sounds fantastic, "Curtains".
Is he willing to spend a lot or does he want cheaper tickets?
If your boyfriend isn't much of a theatre guy, maybe you want to avoid shows such as Company, Grey Gardens, and Les Mis and stick with something more "fun."
Curtains
Beauty & the Beast (before it closes)
Mamma Mia!* (most may argue this because of a thin storyline, but apparently it's pure fun)
Spring Awakening*
Drowsy Chaperone (may be iffy if your boyfriend isn't much of a theatre guy)
Spamalot
Hairspray
Lion King
The Producers
* = haven't seen but based on what I've read from other people; perhaps someone else can elaborate
I'm actually going tomorrow.. HA. but i was thinking about going to a saturday matinee this sat. I am definitely gonna take a trip up to see legally blonde.. I think it sounds great!
yeah.. I don't know much about Spring Awakening.. anyone seen it? I was thinking about that one.. just haven't had much time to be researching the shows. I'm a little behind on the theatre scene rigt now.
Threadjack, but where do you go to school in Boston? Just curious because I'm a sophomore at Boston U.

"Tell me what I see!"
edit; for quotation marks. People took it literally rather than realizing what today is and what it reminded me of.
Maybe it was a last minute surprise, C. It happens. I'd be asking the same thing too.

I can't comment on shows that opened recently, my last trip to New York was in February of 06, but I know what it is like to only have time for 1 show and want to make a good choice. You will probably get a lot of suggestions from people more in the know of current productions, but from a fan point of view and wanting to have a good experience, I would suggest the following:
Wicked
Jersey Boys
Mamma Mia
They are a good fun night at the theater and have never let me down. I also brought people that really don't go for musical theater and of all the show I have seen, these are the ones that they enjoyed the most.
If I were able to go right this minute, I would probably choose:
Spring Awakening, haven't seen, but like what I have heard.
Les Miserables, saw the original.
Rent, only because I see it everytime I go, tradition.
You know what you like, use your instincts, you will make a good decision.
Wicked would be impossible now unless you magically win the lotto.
actually that's what I was thinking.. I thought ave q might be a lot of fun.
I suggest Spamalot, Drowsy, or The Producers. They are all funny!

Avenue Q is definitely a lot of fun. Especially since your boyfriend isn't, as your described, a "theatre guy" you probably want to stick with a fun show. Avenue Q, Spelling Bee, The Drowsy Chaperone (possibly), and Spamalot would be great choices, you just want to make sure you can get tickets.
Have fun!
spring awakening is the best show i have ever seen. it is beautiful, and you will love it. fantastic music, wonderful acting. it is perfect. HOWEVER, spring awakening is a little heavy, and if you don't really want something like that and more fun, maybe curtains or one of the other shows suggested. i hear hairspray is fun also.
spring awakening is great, it does have comic relief. actually, you may want to see this because if it does well at the tony's, you'll probably kick yourself for not seeing it later. and i'm sure your boyfriend will really enjoy the music, it's very contemporary rockish.
i change my vote, go see spring awakening, you can't miss if you see it. if you want to know more, feel free to PM me. =)
Spring Awakening, definitely. It's incredible, and rush tickets are only $26. I loved it.
Also, I have a very very good friend who's a freshman at BoCo, and another good friend who was just accepted!!
Company or Spring Awakening are my current favorites.
I don't know about SA. That's a very dark/heavy show, and I don't think it equals a fun night ath the theatre. Sweeney Todd has comic relief, but that's not a "fun" night either.
I agree w/ Avenue Q, and Hairspray. Two great shows.
Whatever you choose, enjoy!
I highly suggest Spring Awakening. But Avenue Q and Hairspray sounds like good ideas for you guys.
