"Re: The film version of ALNM. Screenplay was by Hugh Wheeler. It was directed by Hal Prince and it *still* bombed. Maybe Roger Corman's involvement had something to do with it?
WTF was Rex Reed smoking when he wrote that review. He compared it to Gigi?!! Maybe Gingold's involvement made him confused because the film version of ALNM *cannot* hold a candle to Gigi."
HAHA yeah using Corman's budget studio was probably a bad sign. Don't forget that Prince and Wheeler had already teamed up (with a score by John Kander) for the bomb Something for Everyone--though I admit I quite like the film.
Then again I'm a huge defender of the Night Music film. It has a lot wrong with it, and is definetly missing some life, but it seriously is in no way the truly atrocious movie its reputation would have you think (films like Chorus Line are far worse adaptations).
As for Rex Reed--I think he basically just gave reviews to see his name on posters. :P I know he was considered a real film critic (though the fact he played the pre op Myra Breckinridge in the film of the same name should say something) but his reviews and blurbs basically remind me of the ones we now get for movies from Larry King.
