Which show's performance has gotten standing ovation from the audience at Tonys?
I know:
- Gypsy (2003 Revival)
- The Lion King
- Ethel Merman's medley when she accepted the Special Tony Award
What else?
Brian Stokes Mitchell received one when he performed Man of La Mancha at the 2003 Tonys.
Did Dreamgirls back in 1982? I know the ovations for that song occured nightly durring Holliday's run.
Al Sharpton got one as he walked onto the stage during Spelling Bee's performance, if that's counted I don't know

The Wedding Singer got the best audience reaction last year.
Like hell it did.

I didn't know there was an award for "best audience reaction."
After Ragtime's performance, Anthony LaPaligia's(nominated for View from the Bridge) wife, Gia Carides (Strictly Ballroom movie) gave it a solo standing O. Does that count? LOL
Al Sharpton got a huge laugh and major audience applause but no standing ovation. Holliday did not get a standing ovation at the Tony's. She got thunderous applause, but not a standing ovation. The Wedding Singer did actually get the best audience reaction last year (it had the second best performance, though by far the most energetic one), but no standing ovation. I think that Gypsy/Man of La Mancha in 2003 were the last shows to get standing ovations at the Tony's.
COOOOLKID: What can you tell me about the standing ovation for Ethel Merman when she did a medley of songs and received a special Tony Award? Do you remember what songs were in the medley? I must have missed that year's Tony awards, damn it. I would give anything to have seen that.
Incidentally, as you may know, in 1960 no one from GYPSY, including Ethel Merman, won a Tony award despite several nominations. The musical itself lost to THE SOUND OF MUSIC and FIORELLO in a tie. And Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins for choreographer, and Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim were not even nominated. For shame!!!
Movin' Out got one.
The Wedding Singer did get a great response. I was there.
I think the medley was "I Got Rhythm," "You're Just in Love," and "Everything's Coming Up Roses," Gypsy9. I also believe that it's on one of the Broadway's Lost Treasures DVDs.
Thanks, Theaterkid. I'll try to find the DVD of Broadway's Lost Treasures.
I think it's one the third one.
Didn't WICKED get a nice repsonse, from what I remember?
And didn't Bernadette Peters singing Another Opening, Another Show get a fairly nice response as well?
Well, plenty of performances have gotten a nice audience reception like THE WEDDING SINGER, WICKED, etc. However, getting a standing ovation at the Tonys is pretty unique.
If I had been at the 1969 ceremony, I definitely would have given a standing ovation to "Turkey Lurkey Time."
Contact got a standing ovation? Movin' Out, too?
The response to Dorothy Loudon singing the brilliant Fifty Percent from the not so brilliant Ballroom was spectacular, almost a standing ovation in 1979 Sondheim and Angela Lansbury look pleased, no, enthralled when the camera cuts to them after the song.
Bernadette Peters got one for GYPSY.
This thread popping up reminded me to check my Tony performances. And no, Movin' Out and Contact did NOT get standing ovations.

I remember the Gypsy standing ovation. Man that was quite amazing. Not only the audiences reaction, but Peters performance as well.
And then....
Hairspray won 8 tony's (including best actress in a musical) and I think I puked.
The Merman medley was on teh 1972 Tony Awards.
Peter Ustinov (one of the hosts that year) narrated and Merman did many of her hits : I Got Rhythm, Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries, I get a Kick out of You; Make it Another Old Fashioned Please; songs from ANNIE GET YOUR GUN; You're Just in love; Everything's Coming Up Roses. (and those are just SOME of the hits she introduced!)
In addition, that 1972 Tonys featured a tribute to Richard Rodgers and he was presneted with a special Tony (and he too got a standing ovation.)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Yeah, the Merman Medley is on the 3rd disc of Broadway's Lost Treasures. It's amazing :)
