I think she would be fantastic as Jenna in Waitress
She says she can't act, but I suspect with the right director she'd flourish. The way she invests herself in her music is evidence that she could do it.
There are lots of people that emote through music, but can't connect through the spoken word. (It doesn't make sense to me, either -- but it's true.)
Case in point - Jennifer Hudson.
I find it funny that those using Kelly's acting abilities in From Justin To Kelly to categorically reject any Broadway future for her fail to mention that Justin Guarini and Anika Noni Rose were equally as horrific in that movie. Should Anika return her Tony and be banished from Broadway forever?
I'm shocked she hasn't been in Chicago yet.
And to the person who mentioned Josh Groban, he was a theatre major at CM with Josh Gad and Leslie Odom Jr. until he dropped out to be a full-time singer.
All I was getting at is that Broadway is an industry and most producers are in it to make money. There's no point in producing a show that they know will flop and lose money. Even if the show is terrible, having a name like Clarkson's attached will bring in a bigger audience and thus more money.
I think she'd be great in Sound of Music or something like that where there isn't some huge emotional burden. She can totally play sweet. But then, I feel like her voice would be wasted.
When her Mother-In-Law Reba finally agrees to be Miss Mona and she could be Doatsie Mae.

This thread got me excited because I love Kelly, so did a little research. According to this,http://www.playbill.com/article/which-american-idol-winner-would-like-to-be-a-funny-girl-on-broadway-com-343040 she actually got her start doing musicals in high school and would like to play Fanny Brice. And this one also says she is interested in Broadway http://www.celebeat.com/articles/19190/20150227/kelly-clarkson-interested-country-album-broadway-piece-releases-3rd-march.htm
I concur with her being perfect for Jenna in Waitress. Not sure about her acting, but I agree that judging potential based on a nearly universally panned film (From Justin to Kelly) may not be predictive.
I'm getting the impression that Jennifer Nettles is preparing to step into the role of Jenna. It certainly seems that way based on the number of videos that are being posted of her singing She Used to Be Mine.

Not necessarily . Jen Nettles and Sara Barailles are good friends, plus Jennifer Nettles is providing publicity and exposure for the song (and by extension, Sara's what's inside album and the musical ) by singing it in her concerts to a predominantly country music fanbase
I can see Clarkson doing well in a sung-through or mostly sung-through show where the material is... I know it's a disparaging term, but "histrionic."
Consider it like this: in opera and some musicals, the music itself does the heavy lifting and a good interpretive singer like Clarkson can excel just by trusting the music, as opposed to some more nuanced pieces where you have to bring a deep internal actor's technique to the role.

Grew up singing musical theater, Broadway nerd, sings "My Man" from Funny Girl at Radio City Music Hall, in the video below.
I think she could do it for sure.

She'd be amazing in Funny Girl. Shows her vocal chops and she'd be allowed to be a little off-beat and goofy. Now, whether she'd WANT to do it is another thing. She doesn't strike me as someone who NEEDs a Tony, etc to validate herself.

She doesn't strike me as that type of person either. Luckily, she has said she is interested in it, so hopefully we will get to see her one day. I just listened to the clip posted earlier, and man, her voice is incredible.
