When was the last time a Broadway star became a film star? — Page 2

Well I guess people have different definitions on what a "star" is. For me a "star" is someone already established in the industry... I don't think they necessarily need to be able to sell any project on their names alone to be called a star.
Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

A "star" has a significant following.
Trouble is, most of us think anyone we personally follow thus has a significant following...
Which is why there are people who think Stephanie J Block is a star.

Kathy Bates definitely qualifies, madbrian (yes, it was late '80s, but still).
I think part of the reason I'm sounding so "vague" here is that the definition of a "star" has become more vague today. Just like "classic" or "legend."
Back in the golden age of both Hollywood and Broadway, there was a clear delineation (a "class system," if you will).
You were a star if the studio billed you above the title. That usually came with a "star" dressing room and a physical "star" on your dressing room door.
There was no question or gray area.
With Broadway, it was the same thing. Name above the title, star dressing room, and even a star on the door.
It's a different era now.

Like Kathy Bates, it wasn't exactly recent, but John Goodman.

I'd say Aaron Tveit could be on his way. A key role in the Oscar-nominated Les Miserables and the lead role in an upcoming tv series on USA (Graceland premieres on 6/6). Also, his Graceland costar Daniel Sunjata could break out as well. He's been getting exposure thanks to Smash, Dark Knight Rises, and the upcoming Lullaby with Amy Adams.

Not entirely sure but maybe Matthew Broderick. Thought he was fairly big in Neil Simon shows before he was succesful in movies like "War Games".

Absolutely, Broderick! I was thinking about his wife and forgot that he won a Tony in 1983 for Brighton Beach Memoirs before he became a movie star.
He counts (even if that was *gulp* 30 years ago!).

I second Viola Davis. I also hope the fabulous Nina Arianda is next to make it big in the movies.

I wouldn't say he's a "star" yet, but Benjamin Walker got the lead role in a big summer blockbuster last year and did a superb job. I wouldn't be surpised if he took on more film roles.

How about Kevin Kline? I think he bagged a couple Tonys prior to starring in Sophie's Choice.

Not so sure about Broderick. He actually hit stage and screen around the same time. I think War Games coincided with his Broadway debut.

The Pitch Perfect box office probably will agree. The film did well, but I doubt it had to do with the inclusion of Skylar Astin and it certainly didn't turn him into a household name overnight.

Viola Davis Amy Ryan and Anna Kendrick are great examples of actresses that started gaining a profile on Broadway with Tony nominations that then got them into movies (and an Oscar nomination).
I have high hopes that Jennifer Damiano will follow in the footsteps of Anna Kendrick.
and Nina Arianda is going to be a big star in the future I think in terms of films.
Some other actresses like Maria Dizzia Marin Ireland and Mirielle Enos have been doing a lot of film/television work lately and I don't think many knew about them before they were on Broadway.

I think true stars are kinda gone these days anyway. Even the biggest stars in the world can't always open a movie in the #1 or even #5 spot. Maybe it'll change again, but for right now, there are very few true, proven stars who could almost certainly, beyond a shadow of a doubt, make a film a success. Look at the recent failures of Nine and Rock of Ages. Yes, that could have been because the films were terrible, but that never stopped films with big stars from making a little cash before.
Still, I guess I'd say Anna Kendrick could very well be on her way to becoming one of Hollywood's top young actors. She's divine.

Madbrian - Looked it up and technically Broderick started on stage first. Brighton Beach Memoirs opened in March 1983 and I think "War Games" came out in June of 1983. Broderick also got good reviews for "Torch Song Trilogy" which he was in when it was Off-Broadway and before Brighton Beach Memoirs.
