Well, the Ethel Barrymore Theatre was so named because it was really for her to perform in.
Hmm... it's because they will going to be "Lansbury Theatre" and Rivera Theatre", though I agree that performers hardly had their own theatre for decades...

It's quite logical (if unfair) that the great composers and lyricists are remembered for a longer time than the great performers. An old musical can be revived and enjoyed by new generations while a performer can't be enjoyed live after his/her death. With every new generation there will be new stars performing the classics which will keep the name of the composers and lyricists alive, but rather do the opposite for the original performers. It's a little bit different in the pop industry where the performers get all the attention and the original performances are the most commonly played.

That's why a composer with an ego but with no singing talent is wiser to choose the musical business instead of the pop industry.

Since every generation breads new iconic stars who are considered by that generation to be worthy of having their name put on a theater, there will soon be no theaters left to name. What will probably happen is that some theaters will be renamed with great controversy when the honored persons name has somewhat faded from the public conciousness.

What about Hal Prince?
I like the Lansbury Theater
There are plans to build the "Stephen Sondheim Theatre" on top of the Queen's theatre in London, which is one of the reasons why Les Miz may be moving again. I'd second the Hal Prince Theatre, would love to see that.

Sondheim should get a theatre, but it should be sponsored by Snapple. It'll be the Snappleheim Majesty Theatre.

I wish the Richard Rodgers had been named Rodgers & Hammerstein, but never mind.

I do think Brooks Atkinson is a particularly ungainly name.

There is a fast food stand at the corner of 41st dishing out re-heated, unimaginative slop that only tourists ever go for- perhaps this could be re-named in honour of ALW?

as long as we don't get corporate names like the Hilton or the Marriot.

I know there are much stronger cases for folks like Sondheim, but if it were up to me, I'd name a theater after Elaine Stritch.

I think theatres are named after the chumps with the bread to buy or sponsor them. I think talent or accomplishment doesn't always mean anything.

I think the Brooks Atkinson is a weird name that hasn't had a great track record with recent shows. Suzy Somers show was there. Actually, Suzanne probably could have her own theatre since she is multi-millionaire. She may need to build her own if she ever wishes to grace a stage again.

Martin Short makes fun of the fact that he's in the Bernard B. Jacobs theater. It doesn't exactly have an attractive name. Rename it the Steven Sondheim theater, please!
Oh, and the Majestic should be renamed the Lloyd Webber just because Phantom will never close and so it seems like he should have a theater to call his own.
