Before I even clicked on the link I immediately thought of Toni Collette. Speaking of The Wild Party. You could even bring back her pairing with Tonya Pinkins for Vera.

Just for any one that's interested there is a small revival in UK later this year.
This theatre has been producing some work to critical acclaim and currently has a striped back version of Aspects of Love transferred to the off West End Southwark Playhouse.

And Michael Urie as Vera

With Emily Skinner as Vera.

Switch it. I think Harvey could do better justice to a character created by Bea Arthur

Exactly!
Charles Busch as Mame and
Harvey Fierstein as Vera
and Mario Cantone as Gooch
Donna Murphy, Audra, or Jane Krakowski would all make me happy. MAYBE Cheno could pull it off.

Sutton Foster is now the ripe and right age for it, and she is super talented .

I’ve always thought Sutton would be perfect for the role!
I think Donna Murphy would be superb. Emma Thompson is an interesting suggestion. I also think Christine Ebersole would be terrific. I think Laura Benanti and Sutton Foster still come across as too young for the role in persona but would obviously have the acting/vocal chops to pull it off.
Toni Collette.
But like the Sutton idea a lot too.
Being Australian I admire the career Toni Collette has created for herself.
She has sung in a band but has she ever done an 8 show a week musical, or shown any interest in doing one?.
With all her movie recognition lately, the public MIGHT know who she is---Toni Collette--from Muriel to Mame--now on Broadway.

I wonder if a male version of Mame would work?

Isn't Agnes Gooch usually reserved for a more homely woman? Bernadette still look damn good.
Yes but with that strange pinched voice-perfect for that winey sounding Agnes, and with some 'Ugly Betty' do-overs--she would be the ideal choice.
