I have to agree. Best suggestion in the thread. And, as anyone who has her solo albums knows, she is a FIERCE singer!"
Thank You - that was my suggestion above !!
OK, instead of Sean Hayes as Vera, how about Debra Messing?
Mullaley killed it last night on Will & Grace; she's perfect!

I saw her do it at the Westbury Music Fair in the early 80s.........
Somehow I still love the show.

You mean PATTI LuPone? If you're gonna use her in your screen name, at least learn how to spell it.

I think it would be FASCINATING to reverse their known character types and have Megan play Mame and Messing play Vera. Both know how to wring laughs and elevate material, have chemistry and a great working relationship.

If Megan wants to be back on BWAY she should have her people contact Jerry Herman and suggest Zaks and his team for a MAME revival with her!

I think she could be a great Vera, but i do not see her as Mame. Also, at 60, she is TOO OLD for the role of Mame, who ages 15 or so years over the course of the show. I would love someone in the mid-30s to 40 age range to play Mame. Re the suggestion re Messing, the few times I have seen her sing, her voice seemed very weak to me; I acknowledge that at least once was in character and may have been intentional.
Jarethan-one of my fav. contributors here. Always like that you have such a wide, and wise knowledge of all/most things musical and you respond and contribute with manners and respect.....x

Toni!!! Always been my 1st choice for MAME!
Just watched Toni Collete in Velvet Buzzsaw--she has so many different 'looks' and they all seem to work as she takes on the character. Jake Gyl[you know who I mean] was a camp revelation with that terrible wig, full flight arm/hand movements 'clutching his pearls' and confused sexuality thrown in [beautiful bum for all those interested].
Toni would rock Mame.

I will have to tell that to my wife, who claims I have little to no manners or knowledge, so thank you for bolstering my self esteem.
PS -- Per your later post, I you liked Jake in Velvet Buzzsaw, which I am expecting watch tonight, if you haven't seen it, you should look up Nightcrawler. He plays a sociopath, maybe even a psychopath, who becomes a successful photographer of violent scenes which he then sells to local news, i.e., another very strange character. I really feel he should've won the Oscar that year (instead of, I think, Eddie Redmayne (who was also great)), but he had a problem...he did not even get nominated.

There is a production here in Manchester later in the year, with the incredibly talented Tracey Bennett. I can not wait.
