As you can see with Joel Grey's official coming out, it didn't make the news as much as it would have years ago like Ellen Degeneres or NPH scenarios. Even though there is some discrimination we are in a more accepting society where people feel more free to come out. Now responding to your question I don't think most people view it as a big deal anymore for a man to get married to a man, and vice-versa (especially in the more liberal parts of the country).

You think Joel Grey coming out would have gotten a Time Magazine cover (as Ellen did) years ago?! I think an Advocate cover would have been a stretch. I love Joel, but he isn't that famous...

People are more OK with straight homosexuality.

It's a pretty easy question to answer-- a loud, vocal, "Christian" minority in this country are still trying to legally discriminate against the LGBT community. They actively try to pass legislation (at the state and federal levels) to limit the civil rights of a gay Americans, be in employment, housing, or marriage.
As long as these "Christians" continue to force their spiritual hypocrisy on this country, it will still be a big deal when anyone, famous or not, declares their orientation openly.

Posted: 1/29/15 at 10:04amWell, that little news bar on the side of Facebook had the Joel Grey's coming out story at the top of its list yesterday, so I'd think it's getting some decent coverage in terms of his fame (considering whoever runs that part of Facebook assumes that the regular user will know who Joel Grey is).

Posted: 1/29/15 at 12:08pmSince we still have racism and sexism, even though the mainstream's consciousness was first raised about those evils long before it was first raised about homophobia, it is not at all surprising that we still also have homophobia.

That's run by an algorithm that predicts what stories you will find interesting based on your likes and posting history and profile. There is nobody who sits there and picks what stories to place in your newsfeed.

Is that even an option? My understanding is the BWW software (or their implementation of it) is pretty basic, and this is beyond their powers. No?

"Why is homosexuality still news today?"
Perhaps because people are still put to death for it around the world?

Because some people--increasingly few in number--are so insecure they can only define themselves by denigrating those they define as "opposite". I say their number is declining, but that only seems to be true in term of sexuality; racism seems on the rise, if anything.
Homophobia will always be with us, alas, just as racism.

"The supreme court will be voting on nation wide gay marriage in June. Studies show that 80 percent of Americans accept homosexuality and 70 percent approve of gay marriage "
The Court does not vote, but rather, decides. Not a pedantic distinction, but important for the point that the Supreme Court will be making a decision that will affect states who voted on gay marriage bans. Justice Kennedy, I pray, will side with the 4 liberal justices and find that equal protection precludes anti-gay marriage legislation. However, and I pause slightly at this thought, Kennedy is a state's rights advocate. He could arguably say this is an issue for a state to decide, and not the federal government. That said: he still wants a legacy. And writing the majority opinion (potentially with Roberts joining) would lead to a great legacy.

@ LYLS3637 - Oh, here we go! I was waiting for someone to throw that out! LOL. Just Kidding! :)
-While it is true that some Christians are against it, we are not all against it. And there are certainly tons of people who are not christian or have any faith at all that support Anti-Gay laws.

darreyl102-- that's not what I said. I said that those who were leading the legal battle against LGBT Americans were "Christians." That's just the truth. Anita Bryant, George Bush, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, and Antonin Scalia (just to name a few), have legislated bigotry (directly or indirectly) based soley on their "Christian" morality. Sure, there are non-Christians in America who support anti-gay initiatives. But those who actively pursued (and continue pursuing) legal discrimination for gay Americans are "Christians."

I can think of a more innocent reason that an actor's coming out is news: People want to know EVERYTHING about their favorite stars, probably including what brand of toothpaste they use. Also, although Joel Grey was not, in my opinion, "crush material," as soon as an attractive male comes out as gay, I can almost hear the collective sigh of the straight females -- Another one bites the dust for hot fantasies.
