The only things that would need to be touched up on a film adaptation of Sunset would be the ensemble scenes/numbers - do people really have problems with moments between Joe & Norma or anything that happens at the house on sunset?
People love to bring up Glenn’s age as a point, as if that doesn’t help the portrayal. 70 in 2019 is the 50 of 1950 - JLO is 50 years old, for God’s sake.

i am in the minority of people who really like SB. I will admit immediately that there are more than one boring spot in the show, but I think it has a lot of highs, and I think it is ALW's best score. I would love to see it made, and I think GC has matured to the point where she is too old for the role of Norma, just as BS is too old for Mama Rose. Such a shame on both counts.
Re the Oscars, I thought that Close gave the second best performance of the year, after Christian Bale (who I thought gave a performance for the ages). We are just not used to seeing Close giving subtle performances, although Albert Nobbs was also a subtle performance.
That said, I thought Colman -- an actress who I have enjoyed in everything in which I have ever seen her -- was terrific in a movie that I actually had reservations about. While I was disappointed that Close did not win, Colman was the best alternate. Her acceptance speech was also delightful; I find interesting that such an interesting actress comes across as a delightful ditz on these awards shows (this and the Golden Globes).

“If Sunset is made into a movie, maybe Sajak and Paul can write a few new songs to punch it up a little.”
PAT SAJAK FROM “WHEEL OF FORTUNE” WILL WRITE THE SONGS? I’M SOLD!
They could also adapt “The Wife” for the stage and have Glenn go for a fourth Tony

Why do you feel that you're in a "minority"? Is it because some posters speak in sweeping generalizations to make it seem like their opinion is the norm (e.g., "Even Broadway fans find the show boring" )?

We have a classic Billy Wilder film of Sunset Boulevard already.
Nobody needs this and nobody wants this.
Even by Andrew Lloyd Webber fans this is not a universally beloved show like Phantom or Cats.

If it must happen at all, I'm still stuck on the idea of Michelle Pfeiffer for a film version of SUNSET BOULEVARD. She can sing, is a brilliant actress, is the right age, the right glamour, the right mystique, and also overdue for Oscar recognition.

Too bad Damages was not a film as I think that's the type of role that would help Close win an Oscar. She still gave what I think is one of the most incredible performances on television with that. However, Oscar voters tend to like their lead female actress to play likeable/warm or at least non-threatening roles, with the exception of like Frances McDormand last year though I think the whole murdered daughter thing with people in the town being against her helped make her character sympathetic, and we know Close didn't specialize in that.

Pfeiffer is a 3-time Oscar nominee: LOVE FIELD, THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS (which she sang in) and DANGEROUS LIAISONS. The Academy is more than aware of her talent.

Where on earth are you getting this nonsense?
It’s nonsense that we don’t need a remake of an already classic perfect film noir?
I disagree.

Reaching out for opinions and comments here.
One thing I've never fully understood about SB is just what exactly ended Norma Desmond's career?
Right off the bat, I'm ruling out the transmission to sound, because as we can tell there wasn't a thing wrong with either Swanson's or Close's or Balgord's speaking voice.
Could it have been the types of roles she might have been insistent on continuing to play, while at the same time continuing to mature?
Too unrealistic with her salary expectations?
New people and new talent that shoved her out?
The fact that the movies were adapting themselves more to the tastes of Depression-era movie-goers?
I know - going off on a tangent here, but still.. always wondered about, as C.B. put it... the "brush off."
Thanks.

It's nonsense that this is about a remake of the film; Glenn Close was in the stage musical.

I'm not arguing that the Academy isn't aware of Michelle Pfeiffer's talent. I'm saying she hasn't won an Oscar yet, and is deserving of one. I also think she'd be brilliant as Norma Desmond for the reasons I stated already.

Posted: 2/26/19 at 10:37amIn the film and in the musical adaptation, it is made clear several times that the arrival of sound/talking motion pictures ended her career as it did to countless actors who couldn’t make the transition from silent films to sound films. We need to accept this information regardless of our opinions of the speaking voices of the actresses who have played Norma Desmond, including Gloria Swanson who herself was one of the many silent film actresses who didn’t make the silent-to-sound transition.

But Gloria Swanson DID make films during the talking era. I partly think what happened to Swanson was that by the time talking pictures came around, she had aged out of being an ingenue / femme fatale as per the standards of the era and had trouble (or didn't want to) age into older, more appropriate roles.
This is also a subplot echoed in SUNSET BOULEVARD.

Posted: 2/26/19 at 11:17amI can also imagine that many silent movie actors at the time genuinely struggled with being able to speak their lines convincingly once the transition began. It’s one thing to emote with your features and mouth silently, but it’s another thing to add the tone to your voice that makes your character’s emotions ring true without it sounding hammy or unconvincing.

Olivia rightfully won.
Glenn won't be receiving a competitive Oscar in this lifetime. The Wife was her last chance at an actual win. Now let's get the talented woman an Honorary Oscar for her entire body of work.
And BLVD is not opening.

But it really is a remake of the film seeing how the musical is BASICALLY the film.
and it’s a really small minority that wants this musical on film.

You Fanboys are ridiculous. Why was The Wife her last chance to win an Oscar? Is she planning to retire? She is 71 and appears to be in good health. Would you be happy if she walked out on the ice and died?

Wow, great insight. What are her next 10 movies that you seem to know about that won't be providing her with a chance?

We all know that 71 is not a death sentence- but let's face it- Glenn Close is not a major in-demand actress- a la Meryl Streep- or even Densch or Mirren- though she certainly is a name with a great resume. Realistically- how many great women's roles are out there for women in their 70's? I don't have the figures- but how many women above the age of 70 have won Oscars- Jessica Tandy did it- but let's face it- the odds are not with her. Am I wrong?

Hollywood has decided that only one actress over the age of 60 will be regularly cast in big roles and it's Meryl Streep. She has first dibs on every project and like 20 other actresses have to fight for the scraps or make their own projects like Glenn Close. The British dames are luckier because they always have British talent to create roles for them non-stop. Even outside of TV, the Brits take care of their older respected talent in great numbers than Hollywood does, well when it comes to women.

Were you dropped on your head a child?
The entirety of SB concerns a one-time silent film star; it is central to the plot, the main character and the theme. I just turned 65 and I wasn't even born until 25 years after the advent of "talkies". You can make a new movie about an aging star's "return", but if it's SUNSET BOULEVARD, it has to be set no later than 1950 (when Glenn Close was still a toddler).
