Will Radcliffe get nominated for Merrily

This is the actually question here regarding the revival. Radcliffe has tried to get nominations but never has so do you think the Tonys like his performance enough that they let him in. If he doesn't get nominated here he never will.

To say that "if he doesn't get nominated here he never will" is an unusual prediction given we have no idea what his future roles might be or the performances he will deliver in them.

Having seen the show recently, I think he definitely deserves at least a nomination. Whether he gets one, who the heck knows.

Pitting him against Groff in the leading category is likely to split the votes, allowing someone like Redmayne to grab the award. As much as I’d hate to see it, I think he stands a better shot in the supporting category.

I think of Frank as lead and Mary and Charlie as supporting, and that's definitely how they will push it to avoid putting Groff and Radcliffe against each other. I absolutely think he will get nominated in supporting and have a good chance of winning. He has more than proven himself as a Broadway actor, not just a celebrity who wanted to give it a try, and he has done excellent work across the board. I still can't believe he didn't get nominated for How to Succeed.

Honestly, I could see Merrily winning revival, director, best actor, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress.

Daniel Radcliffe hasn't had much luck at the Tony nominations, having missed for ''Equus,'' ''How to Succeed'' and ''The Cripple of Inishmaan.'' At the same time, he was nominated by the Drama Desk for each of those shows.

I suspect ''Merrily'' will petition Radcliffe to be eligible for Featured, which is where the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama Desk placed him last season. Even though Radcliffe is above the title, the Tonys have the discretion to consider him in Featured, as they did with Ricky Martin in ''Evita.''

Radcliffe IS amazing in ''Merrily,'' and I, too, hope he gets his first Tony recognition. That said, I imagine, we as awards junkies, devote more attention to this than Radcliffe does.

In 2011, he spoke at the 92nd Street Y and addressed his Tony ''snub'' for ''How to Succeed'': ''The thing that shocked me was everybody else’s reaction to me, and how they started treating me — because it was like I lost a relative. In my opinion, it was sweet, but over the top. People would ask me, ‘Are you OK?’ And I’d go, ‘I’m really OK!’ I think I speak for 99 percent of actors when I say that the reason we do this job, while it’s lovely to get recognized by your peers, it’s not the reason why we do it. The people that do this job for awards and recognition are kind of worshiping at the wrong altar.''

This would be the coup of the century. Nominations? Absolutely. But the roster is way too stacked this year to do a sweep of five major categories - especially since there’s a remote possibility it may be closed come voting time and thus may wrench its chances unless everything and everyone else sucks.

I mean, perhaps not the most likely outcome, but hardly the coup of the century. It got rave reviews and is clearly a strong contender for Best Revival. It would not be surprising to see Tony voters give Best Director to Maria Friedman for making Merrily "work" as well as it's ever going to work. Groff is the front runner for Best Actor currently, and Radcliffe and Mendez both got great reviews too. Sure, there will be stiff competition, but certainly possible.

He is a STRONG contender for Best supporting actor, less so for lead But it is going to be a hell of a competition this year for the Tonys and anything Sweeping is unlikely.

We're early enough in the season that it's going to be hard to predict what shows yet may materialize, but Revival is almost certainly going to be a bitterly-fought battle between MERRILY and CABARET. TOMMY is also a contender, though I don't think it can withstand the momentum of these two absolute events, and Spamalot will I am sure happily use t's Tony Performance slot to launch it's National Tour but has little chance of much awards love. The Wiz, if it actually makes it to broadway after lackluster tour reviews, wis the show most likely to be shut out, depending on what else pops in/pops up. Sunset Blvd is rumored for the St. James and could cause an upset in this category. Very crowded field this year and nothing is certain.

New musical wise - I don't see Harmony or How to Dance in Ohio lasting long enough to make an impression come Tony time, though my heart yearns for a Nod for Chip Zien. OHIO's Macy's Day performance did not impress me. It would be lovely to see Gutenberg get a nom, but it's too light a puff piece, and Here Lies Love will go down in the "noble failure" category and likely get shut out. I imagine we are looking at a best musical spread of The Notebook, Days of Wine and Roses, Lempicka and. if they've done a tremendous amount of work on the show since it's run at the Public, Suffs (which no one I know actually cared for). Back to the Future could sneak in a nom, and if it doesn't, it will almost certain buy time on the broadcast. The Outsiders or Water For Elephants sneak in as well. LOTS of musicals this year, which is going to make acting categories very hard to predict, and if HELL'S KITCHEN transfers on the strength of its' reviews, which it could, it could throw a lot of the races out of whack. I think Locks for Noms include the Merrily Trio, D'Arcy James and O'Hara, Roger Bart, Leslie Krietzer, Redmayne, Raskin and Neuwirth and potentially Maryann Plunkett. Should Hell's Kitchen or Sunset Blvd transfer expect noms for Brandon Victor Dixon, and Nicole Scherinzger.



Bringing this back on topic, my early dollars would definetley be on Radcliffe for supporting actor, but it's only November, and anything can happen.

Just a quick note, at the risk of deviating off-topic: while there's precedent for joint nominations at the Tonys, they have since written a new rule to disallow them. And even if they were to be moved to reverse the rule-change, it wouldn't be done mid-season.

Spamalot is currently booking through April 24th and could potentially be a vehicle for star or stunt casting. Unless it bleeds out, this show will likely play out its run.

An early closure would likely be in January, which would mean cancelling Brightman's contract, while waiting for Sunset Boulevard to pack it up in London to come over. And I think they would be remarkably stupid to do that this season when the field is crowded enough as it is. I already think Hell's Kitchen making the move to the Shubert for the spring when the reviews were not a knockout smash is going to be a foolish gamble.
