I think they were saying that in addition to her performance. Honestly the performance isn't the first thing people think about when voting for these things. I think everyone knows this. I actually think it was Patti who said in an interview a week ago that you can only evaluate the acting awards fairly if you put all 5 actresses in the same role.

That is very true.
The Broadway community is so tight-knit that ones body of work and career and other factors always work there way in, but I don't necessarily feel it is truly a bad thing.

At this point, I'd put money down for Patti to win.

That's Broadway.
Someone who votes for Kelli will without a doubt also remember her performance in Piazza, LaChanze in Island, and Patti in Anything Goes etc.

I think awards can never please everyone, which sucks, but I really hope LaChanze gets this. She has given me one of the most emotional days in the theater. Yes Patti managed to successfully break the traditionally accepted way of playing Lovett and given us something completely fresh. However, I only saw Patti playing Lovett passionately. LaChanze made me see Celie, portrayed every layer that can be drawn from how that role is written and adds more to it. She has given a performance that is not to be missed.
I respect both women greatly but could only ever imagine LaChanze truly being awarded best actress. And this woman deserves her glory as well, she hs never gotten due recognition and it would be marvellous to see her get it.

I'm gay, but I'd have to agree.
I disagree with those who say that La Chanze should take the Tony. She's fine, but nothing remarkable.
LuPone is giving one of the most remarkable performances I have ever seen - let alone of the year.
hey ya never knowit could happen. doubtful but ....
There's no way in hell La Chanze is going to win...

stranger things have happened...
and LaChanze is actually deserving of it too.

I would place my money on her as well at this point, I just personally do not find her this incredible force, especially when the ensemble of Sweeney Todd is just too powerful to focus on one performance. I think that in the case of The Color Purple, LaChanze is captivating from start to finish. Patti is just reinventing a classic role and does a very good job with it, but LaChanze was just so powerful and affecting to me personally.
hey 2 yrs ago everyone thought donna murphy was gonna win
This season is different. Patti actually shows up.

Maybe she should take a break then...

Ok I'm tired of people bringing up Donna Murphy's absences. I don't think the woman said "gee I don't feel like doing it today. I'm not coming in". Anyway yeah Idina woulda been the last person in that catagory I woulda given that award too, but it's water under the bridge now.
would love to see LaChanze win but Lupone will take it - The woman hasn't won a Tony in 26 years
And LaChanze hasn't won a Tony ever. She's been on Broadway for 20 years and hasn't yet been recognized with a Tony. And if she is ever to win, this is the role it's going to happen in.

Completely agree with that Foster. I don't think Patti is in dire need of yet another Tony, she respects her art too much to care. But LaChanze is more deserving of ever in this matter and I hope the committee will take some of that into consideration.
If I were on the Tony committee I would have a really hard time with this one! I love them both! However, I'm rooting for La Chanze. Celie is an amazing role and La Chanze delivers a fabulous performance!

i honestly don't think anyone is in dire need of a Tony. I'm soo torn. I really want Patti to win because it's truly great acting but LaChanze is doing great work too I'm told. From what I've seen she's at the top of the list too.
You should see The Color Purple Jazzy! Just 20 bucks, front row rush. Some of the critics may have been a bit harsh, but I loved it! Moving, entertaining and deserving of all the Tony nominations it recieved!
I totally agree. As much as I adore Patti Lupone, LaChanze deserves the award this year.

Yeah when I get 20 bucks I'll go. I'm broke and I'm honestly not wild about the score. NOT AT ALL. I hear the reason to see that show is for the performances.
Well this category is completely win-win & lose-lose. Personally I'm routing for LaChanze, her performance in TCP is really something special. Now I have to be fair, I haven't seen Patti yet, so I won't pass total judgement on who should win until I see ST; but as much as I love Patti, I really want to see LaChanze take this, I agree w/ Foster, this is certainly the role to win a first Tony for!

The score is decent, but I find the sets and performances to be amazing and the heart of the show. It shouldn't win best musical or anything, but I am hoping that she can get something to distinguish her hard work.
edit; I'm not biased either, I love LuPone in her endeavors and loved her in Sweeney. I'm going my 5th time next week, I certainly appreciate what she has done for her role and the entire show. However, I just couldn't imagine LaChanze's performance as Celie not being the most deserved. However, I can see it being won by LuPone and probably will.
