Just got back for another visit to "TCP", and this has to be a Tony for LaChanze. I really liked Patti Lupone in "Sweeney", and liked the show a lot, but in my opinion, her performance is the 3rd best on the stage in "ST".
And as much as I love the performances of the other women in "TCP", LaChanze carries the show. Her performance is so layered, and so special !!
Also, can not understand for the life of me how "TCP" is basically getting dismissed as far as "Best Musical" !!!
I agree.
Couldn't agree with you more about both comments - LaChanze is simply stunning in that show, and I thought that TCP was a thoroughly enjoyable musical; it's different to anything else on broadway, and although the book does need some reworking, I feel it's been put together beautifully - great story, great music, great set and great cast. I'm seeing Drowsy and Jersey Boys in the days before the Tony Awards (and have already seen TWS) so I can't say that it should win best musical, but I think it should be a strong contender, definitely. From what I've heard, I think the only musical that doesn't stand a chance of winning is TWS. The Tony Awards will be extremely interesting.

It's just simply LuPone's year. She has the most buzz in the category. Not LaChanze.
Even Chita admitted that this is Patti's year, and she's rooting for Patti.
*hides "GO PATTI" sign* Sure...it could go...either way...
I simply dont see Patti winning, as much as I like her. She doesnt carry her role the way that LaChanze does. (JMHO)
And I much as I love "TDC", I dont think it has NEAR the performances that "TCP" has. (Have not see "JB", so can not comment) Saw the "Wedding Singer" twice, and its fun, but not on the same level as "TCP".
Oh I see Patti winning, she just wouldn't be my choice.

Go LaChanze...I am cheering for her all the way but will not be dissapointed one bit if Patti takes the prize.

I see Patti taking it WAY more than I see LaChanze.
Also does LaChanze have a last name?
Neddy,
Just curious, but did you see both performances?
Let me put it this way... I can see Patti winning it, but I would not understand it.
LaChanze is actually her middle name....

I have seen both performances, and found Patti's to be far superior. I am completely rooting for Patti to take the Tony.
LaChanze, while very good in her own right, came in "second" to me. It's ultimately just a matter of personal preference - what each person brings to, seeks for, and takes from a theatrical experience. I would not be upset if LaChanze took it, though.

I would love to see LaChanze win but Lupone will take it - The woman hasn't won a Tony in 26 years and she definitely has her avid supporters. She is soooo lucky Christine Ebersole wasn't eligible this season - That performance would have been unbeatable which is reflected by all the honors she has already won.

i truly believed lachanze should win this award over patti.
I totally agree. LaChanze deserves this award.
I didn't think Patti was anything to write home about, she just didn't do it for me in Sweeney. Evita is another thing . . .. :)
She reinvented and reinterpreted a legendary role and did it wondefully. She should win and will win.

I wouldn't be upset if LaChanze won. I'd actually be happy for her. Actually this year is a great year for women. However, I think many people don't really realize how layered and subtle Patti's performance is. She's made acting choices that to me are stellar and beyond specific. In addition she stays completely open connected to everyone on stage. I didn't see The Color Purple so I can't say LaChanze does or doesn't deserve it over Patti, but just don't underestimate Patti's work. DOn't take subtlety for a general character.
I agree that LaChanze deserves this.
How do you spell TONY?

For me, its a toss up. I saw both, and thought both were certainly Tony-worthy. Either one could win and I'd be happy with the selection.
However, I really can't see Patti walking away empty-handed.
damn.....lmao. and how in hell did 'hot feet' portray us in a better light more than 'the color purple' exactly? i wont be upset if lachanze takes the prize, but i want patti to win.
I don't like how some people (including Chita) have stated that it is Patti's year, that she's been gone too long, that she has a bankable name, and therefore she deserves it, as if coming back to Broadway and being recognized are reason enough to give someone an award.
Actually, I think acting awards are very silly. How do you rate someone's performance against the other, especially if they're very different? It's not like they're competing for their own interpretation of the same character. But that's just me.
I'm actually the most sane person you will ever meet.
Now there's a scary thought.
