"Keep young and beautiful
It's your duty to be beautiful
Keep young and beautiful IF YOU WANT TO BE LOVED."
Oh, 42nd Street. The lyrics are good because they do actually fit the mind- set at the time, toward showgirls, but bad because.... OH MY GOD! WHO WANTS TO SEND THAT MESSAGE?
It's your duty to be beautiful
Keep young and beautiful IF YOU WANT TO BE LOVED."

I absolutely adore Rent (seen it 3 times) but,
"Excuse me, if I'm off track, but if your so wise then tell me, why do you need smack?"

Bring back Birdie! Bring back Birdie!
That's my plan... it's what I live for!
Hear my cry
You know I will go where you lead
I will always follow you
You are what I need more than life itself
Bring back Birdie please, or I'll diiiiieeeeeeee!

I too really love the music from Brooklyn. I feel like it could have been much better with a different lyric writer. Well at least the music is good (in my opinion)

The dentist's song from Little Shop of Horrors... ugh. Hate it. That show has such great music too, it's a pity, in my humble opinion.

Good lord, i noticed after i started this board how many are from rent....that just saddens me because i know how true it is even though i love the show half of the lyrics are just so random!!
In regards to the dentist song-"i'd poison guppies and when i was done, i take a **** cat and bash in his head, thats when my momma said *what did she say* she said my boy i think someday, you'll find a way, to make your natural tendencies pay.....
oh sheer brilliance

i like the famous bare line: "you look great/ don't feel great/ in know" line it just sounds so bad in the music
"Why do we play with fire?-Why do we run our fingers through the flame?"

Ooh! Ooh! Let's not forget "Carrie!!" The show that brought us such gems as:
"Doesn't anybody ever get it right?
Carrie!
Why don't they remember that I'm Carrie White?
Carrie!
Is it any harder to say than g*ddamn toad and crazy
And weirdo and dumb b*tch and
Doesn't anybody think that I can hear?
I hear!
'Specially when I got 'em screaming in my ear!
I hear!
When did everybody decide I'm the one who's the flop?
If I had a wish, God, I wish they'd stop!"
And this song goes on for four more minutes...

Rose, I have the Bring Back Birdie CD! It's hilariously awful... I'm sure a few members of this board own it as well...
Carrie has some of the worst lyrics ever, but i LOVE them! Come on, how can you not love:
"All we ever do is park
Then for hours, you grope me in the dark!
We would go bowling
If you really cared!!!"

Oh, I do love "Carrie!" My personal favorite lyric from "Don't Waste The Moon" is:
"Good girls go to heaven, so they say
But bad girls, they go everywhere!"
There's a "Bring Back Birdie" CD? Where?? And does it have Donald O'Connor's "You sing it! I hate this song anyway!" outburst?

It doesn't even slightly upset me even slightly, Rose.
Consider the source (MusicMan).
I have probably agreed with him once out of every post I've ever read of his, and that's a lot more than most people agree with him. I, like most people, have just stopped paying attention to his bitterness.
I just feel bad he cannot see the brilliance of that song and that lyric.

You can find the Bring Back Birdie CD on amazon.com, used.
It doesn't have his outburst, unfortunately... but it does have the song that caused the outburst!

Over_the_Moon...Just for accuracy: Webber did not write the lyrics to Phantom. Charles Hart and Richard Stillgoe (sorry for butchering that spelling) wrote the lyrics. =)

Many lyrics from Falsettos - but the ones that stick out at this moment are the lyrics to Unlikely Lovers. Who would have thought that such a beautiful melody, with beautiful harmonies, could have the worst lyrics, ever...
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
