So glad to learn this, even though I was able to scrounge up a ticket for this Saturday night. Wonder if they'll do the same thing that happened with Grey Gardens -- having both an Off-Broadway and a Broadway recording. Sounds SOOOO Good!!!!!
Congrats to everyone involved!!! I hope they add more characters and new sets for the Broadway run.
SO very excited for this. Would love to see this in a reconfigured Circle in the Square.
Y'all can guess how I feel about this news!!!!! :^D
Well, congrats to them. I really disliked this show but I'm always happy to see original musicals get more exposure.
This show blew my mind, both in the Gallery Players and York productions. SO glad it is going to have a shot at Broadway! Such an immensely talented cast and creative team. So well deserved! Can't wait to see Jeffry Denman's stunning choreography and hear those stunning Zellnik words and songs on the Great White Way.
This will BOMB! The critics didn't even like it that much to begin with. I just don't see this finding an audience.
Must EVERYTHING transfer? Why isn't a successful off-Broadway run good enough these days?
"Must EVERYTHING transfer?"
In a word...YES.
It's about branding. You brand yourself as the hit off-Broadway show and it may not end up having that much of an afterlife. Particularly for a show the size of YANK! Or, say, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. Shows like I LOVE YOU, YOUR PERFECT... have become staples throughout the country because they are exceedingly easy to produce. YANK! is not.
In the short run, maybe it won't make a profit. But the exposure of being a Broadway show (instead of just Off) will give it a longer life regionally.
I just think it's stupid that off-Broadway is seen as not good enough.
It's not about Off-Broadway being good enough. It's about gaining national and international exposure so that the show at hand can have a life beyond NYC. Whether or not a show makes money on Broadway, simply the fact that it played Broadway will make it much more of an attainable and marketable commodity for runs throughout the U.S. and the world.
It's not about artistic merit, it's about commerce.
I think most agree that Yank is a wonderful show no matter where it plays. But if there is an oppurtunity to raise awareness and/or make some more profit, well isn't that why shows are wrtitten?

I agree with ljay. As wonderful (or as gay-pandery) shows like Yank may be, there isn't that much of an audience for them. Next to Normal is an exception, but that show costs very little to run.
Unless your money is going to be somehow lost by this show being given a shot at gaining a wider audience via Broadway, I don't see what there is to be so upset about.

"I just think it's stupid that off-Broadway is seen as not good enough."
I completely agree with this sentence. But those are the economics.
There was a show in the Fringe Festival last year called VIRAL that I think is Pulitzer-worthy. Though it would probably work best in an off-Broadway house, I hope someday it gets a full-on commercial Broadway run...simply so that many other theatres around the country (and the world, even) would produce this extraordinary piece.
Hopefully they build in some frontal nudity before the Broadway run. Congrats!
Thank you Wanna Be A Foster and SonofRobbieJ for pointing out the attributes for transferring YANK!to a Broadway run. Actors like Bobby Steggert and Nancy Anderson deserve wider audience exposure, they are the real deal, triple threats who can sing, act, dance and some of the nicest people in showbiz. It's wonderful that there is such enthusiasm and devoted following for this New York offbway run. Here's hoping the marketing and branding will entice the typical theatrer tourbus booker, as they will determine a lot of the presales, once they start.

I believe you will find a very long list of shows that have made this same sort of public announcement, only to never actually open on Broadway. This isn't about non-traditional musicals being on Broadway, as the article states - this is about a small show, inexpensive to run, which is all B'way seems to be about these days.
What a thrilling day to hear the possibility that two great and deserving shows may make it to Broadway!
What terrific news!
I just think it's stupid that off-Broadway is seen as not good enough.
It's the economics of Off Broadway--they've become a nightmare for a show like this.
So congratulations to all involved in the best new musical I've seen in years--and to TulitaPepsi, for believing!
I am beyond thrilled that this amazing show will have a longer and fuller life on broadway!
It also thrills me that in the next season there may well be 3 musicals dealing with LGBT issues:
Yank, Hedwig, & Bare
(Im not familiar with Hedwig at all)
Congratulations to all involved. Now I don't feel as bad about not being able to use m ticket tonight.
NEXT TO NORMAL just recouped its $4million capitalization (even tough it took 10 months.) The New York Times article pegs the cost of YANK transferring at $5 million. It would have to run a year in a medium-sized playhouse, but if the show gets opened early enough to take advantage of the buzz generated by the off-Broadway run but late enough that it can make it to the Awards season, it could certainly have a successful run.
YANK headed for Broadway
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
