are there some riffs that you absolutly love?
for me, it's chips riff in M.U.E. when he says, "you wanna know why-i-i-i-i!"
and in spamalot during the diva's lament, when the lady of the lake say "I'm with a bunch of british night, prancing round in woolly ti-i-ights!"
Riffing in musical theatre usually drives me nuts. When used for comic affect it is fine, but when they are trying to be serious or show off, through riffing, I loose interest quickly (ie Brooklyn).
yes! just what we need! a wicked posting as 1 of the 1st to turn people away from answering!
no, seriously, have you heard what Shoshana does with Defying Gravity now? i was getting sick of that song till i saw it 2 months ago with her... i fell in love with it again because its so fresh and different from what Idina did... it's amaaaaaaaaaazing!

Best riff EVER for comic effect - Jan Maxwell. I'm telling you, this woman owns the universe.

hate to be a follower, but i do agree, Shoshana's riffing in Defying Gravity and The Wizard & I are amazing.
As for other riffing - Actually the stuff Chester Gregory does in Hairspray, I dunno if that's considered 'typical rifing' but some of that stuff is fierce. He like scats in a way, it's amazing!
Shoshana's riff at the end of As Long As Your Mine (her verse). It's very sultry and it fits very well.
Shoshana scares me. Honestly, the only thing I can listen to her sing is "I Believe in Love" on the Hair CD. I'm going to get crucified for that.
On the other hand, love love LOVE Chester Gregory.
I like that song, Em. But the end whistle tone thing scare the living crud out of me. Excellent up to that point...I don't like when she breaks out the whistle notes.
That scares me, too. But I like her on the rest of the song.
Lilias White's riffing in the Dreamgirls concert was great-totally motivated and sounded awesome.

It's fine, I actually find that many people use riffing as an excuse for singing. If you will notice, the two people I wrote about, don't rely on riffing to get them through a song. You are intitalled to your opinion but in mine, just a little bit of riffing makes a song have some spice.
em, you got me sooooooooo addicted to that song
beenthere -- glad I checked the thread first because I was going to post the exact same thing!

ahh aigoo's right, i forgot, when she goes up the octave on 'as long as your mine' it's my favorite thing ever.
Er...that's not the one I'm talking about....but yes. That one's cool, too. One I'm referring to is where she actually goes lower at the end of her first verse.
And if it turns out
It's over to fast
I'll make every last moment last
As long as yo-o-ou're mi-i-ne.
When she doesn't overdo it, I love Sho's riffs in DG and NGD.
well it looks like we've established the fact that Shoshana is a pro at riffs and making them work
Personally, I can't stand riffs if not for a comic use. Shoshana Beah I can deal with but seriously everyone else if they're not trying to be funny..I dunno I HATE IT
Shoshana is (in)famous for her riffs.

Em, way back to your first post, Jan Maxwell does own the universe. That Tony nom was so deserved. Her 'singing' in Chitty made my day, all three times.
I Love Shoshana and her riffs. Basically agreeing to Zepka.

Its' adorable.
