And generally isn't that workshops are for? The show is in its initial stages, so it doesn't surprise me that there are kinks to work out.

Everyone knew it was a bad idea from the start. Like Lestat, another vampire musical? Another movie-based cheesy musical?

Do you think you could give us some more evidence as to why its not "coming together"? Also I do agree thats what a workshop is for, to work the kinks out. I trust they will fix what they need to by the time it heads for the great white way.

what i heard from my freind is the problems are with the score and plot
the score is at the moment generic and needs a lot of work(even though the songs have been re written and cut etc many times already)
and the plot issnt coming together at all and the role of woods best freind the salon worker has been played around with so much that they really issnt much of a part left
yes hopefully workshops etc will give them time to sort this out
but this just may be the turkey for 2007
but then again it could all have a happy ending and be next years hairspray

I just thank my lucky stars that your friend who is involved in this production in whatever capacity trusted you with their opinion of a show that's still very much being formulated - they haven't even cast the show yet - and that you felt so inspired to post on BroadwayWorld. Really.. Thank you.
For crying out loud - it was a staged workshop - not even a preview. Do you know how many shows at this stage are "amazing" ??
It would serve you, your friend and everyone involved if you..oh... I don't know.. used discretion and just absorbed your friends opinion for now instead of running to the boards to post.
And that's my .02
(And please don't lump me or the hundreds, thousands or more that DON'T think it was a bad idea in the first place. I like to speak and think for myself.. thanks)

Oh, golly gosh gee, let's see--we hired the composer of BAT BOY and we wonder WHY the score is GENERIC? These producers should have their epaulets stripped.

Sorry. I (personally) find it disgusting (sorry) that someone would slam a show publicly while it's in the workshop phase.

lol the turkey
that is the process though, songs may cut and re-written a numerous amount of times before they are fully presentable. Also they don't need to follow the show exactly like the movie, I suppose they could cut

Ditto!
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

yea it is SO unfair when shows aren't even given the chance to get off on their feet

I think out of all of the announced movie turned musicals, this one has a great chance of being something. I could see how it could work out wonderfully. Although, whether it will come off campy, or cheesy has yet to be seen. And the plot shouldn't be that hard to figure out. Didn't the movie lay the basic bones/structure of the plot?

you never bad mouth your own show publicly. I know it can be very easy sometimes. But musicals/plays everything takes time for it to all come together.
How many shows has everyone worked on - where it doesnt come together until DAYS before it opens?? So saying (a year in advance) that things are not coming together yet, well - duh!

"Everyone knew it was a bad idea from the start."
Which translates to 'you thought it was a bad idea from the start.'
Lots of people thought it was a perfectly sensible idea from the start. So you don't need to over-validate your opinion by implying that 'everyone' thought something when it's plainly obvious that isn't remotely the case.

I was there yesterday at the workshop and the show is far from a mess. They have months to play with this before they begin in performances. While it's impossible to tell how it will eventually turn out, the cast and crew appeared to be excited and cohesive. We will see.

The success of the movie was totally due to Reese Witherspoon, much as the success of WEDDING SINGER was due to Sandler and Barrymore. Recast with other actors - surprise, surprise - WEDDING SINGER doesn't work. Is anyone really that eager to see the "plot" of LEGALLY BLONDE onstage with a lower wattage star and songs by the people who brought you BAT BOY? I don't see this working for a minute. Sad to say...
