Paul Hart's immersive UK staging of THE LORD OF THE RINGS musical to transfer to Chicago Aug 3
2024, 03:14:23 PM
I caught this last weekend and knew going in that it wouldn't be something like the next SIX coming out of The Yard at CSC. The preshow energy leading up to this was quite lovely, with the cast milling about the theater and outdoors (dancing around a maypole, natch) and, it being a nice summer night, it set a good scene. Lots of earnest questions from the cast about "Are you excited for Bilbo's birthday?!?!?" felt like they hadn't worked out their nu

Paul Hart's immersive UK staging of THE LORD OF THE RINGS musical to transfer to Chicago Jul 25

Any recommendations on where to sit for this? I'm in town this weekend and am a person that likes to sit close. I see they've added an AA row (that wasn't there a few weeks ago) and it's $3 cheaper than three rows back. Any issues with sitting so close?

Hilty & Simard to lead DEATH BECOMES HER in Chicago spring 2024 May 8

Bud Weber and Neil Haskell are both wearing trousers instead of full-body leotards when they are part of Viola's crew.

Well, the Viola number is at the top of the show because when they stunt cast it (which they can and I'm sure will), the audience will see the "BIG" name right at the start. I agree the role is underwritten and wonder how it will evolve; that being said, I loved the vocals Williams is bringing. Also, I've seen it twice now, and one night, Williams wore shoes in the opening of Act 2, and then when I saw it this weekend, she was barefoot. I noticed the first

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Now the question...front row center or Center section Row J? I'm so much more familiar with the layout of the Nederlander...

I'll be in Chicago next week and, yay, it overlaps with the first week of shows of DEATH BECOMES HER :) I think I'll be able to see the Thursday preview. Does anyone know of a discount code available? There looks to be enough seats that rush is possible, but I'm a planner....
Thank you, and Siempre Viva!

MAMMA MIA! 25th Anniversary Tour recoups in 13 weeks Mar 4
2024, 02:04:14 PM
I'm also not shocked. Not that the quality of the show has anything to do with it (like the previous post said, it's the name recognition), but this tour is excellent. As someone who has seen MM dozens of times (on tour, on Broadway, in the West End with the OLC, and several regional productions) I went into the tour recently sort of dubious it would be anything different from the same jukebox frivolity it had been the last time it was in my neck

Someone in a Tree2 said: "Pretty sure the producers placed an embargo on publishing reviews until the official opening, so not the fault of reviewers. I saw a screener and am in the camp of those deeply disappointed that they threw out so much of the Bway score, and replaced most of these numbers with new and distinctly inferior songs (some written by the director himself). It's one thing to discard part of a score because there's not enough space in a feature film's runn

Patti Lupone Oscar campaign thread Apr 11
2023, 10:57:20 AM
Well...the lead critic of Vanity Fair (no small potatoes critic) did bring up on their podcast this last week that Patti completely steals the film, and it's the kind of performance where a Best Supporting Actress campaign could easily be built around. Joaquin Phoenix also has Napoleon coming out this year so he may find more prestige there so A24 (the distributor) could focus some effort on this LuPone campaign -- she'd be a gas to send on the campaign trail.

Touring Cast Absences Mar 2
2023, 11:19:49 AM
Giving the cast an extra "rest" day between tour stops is good, in theory. TINA: THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL just arrived in MN and while productions often start on Tuesday, this one opened on a Wednesday with a built-in Thursday matinee. Opening night, both Tinas were out (one is on extended leave and the other was ill/not available), and so the u/s for both had to go on. The entire matinee had to be canceled because she couldn't do two shows in a day the followin

This would make for excellent small sit-down productions in smaller markets. For instance, it would work well in The Playhouse Theater in Chicago and the smaller Pantages Theater in Minneapolis.

Loved this doc already but this section was particularly moving, just to see Anderson clearly having a ball doing the show. The clips confirm what others have said that she made for a solid Roxie.
Isn't she rumored to be coming back?

A Man of No Importance coming to Broadway? Jan 25
2023, 03:37:52 PM
Parsons is not the star (or draw) he was a decade ago (or even five years ago), and the producers knew that. His most recent film tanked (despite it being unexpectedly wonderful) and when he was out with COVID during the off-Broadway run it sent that production into tumult. His u/s was incredibly well received so producers knew he could be a feasible option should Parsons be out, which is why they didn't want to give him above the title billing. So he walked. Which

Agree with this -- saw the show this past Friday and as good as I wanted this to be, it was even better. It felt like one of those &qu

KIMBERLY AKIMBO Reviews Dec 15
2022, 04:27:33 PM
On my recent trip to the city, I caught this as an add-on, last-minute show, and am so very glad I did. A "small"er show than the flashier musicals playing in the same neighborhood, it's richly rewarding and filled with across-the-board rewarding performances. No understudies at my show -- thrilled to have seen Clark's beautiful performance and Milligan's riotously funny (and vocally rip-roaring) supporting turn. Fingers crossed, both of them get Tony A
