NYT: What Happened to Broadway’s New Musicals? This Year, They Vanished.

I've always considered BJJ to be a pretty proficient playwright so this surprises me - I've liked pretty much all of his work except Purpose. Perhaps just a mismatch of writer and material?"

His book was far from the only thing wrong with the Minneapolis

Lincoln Center Theater 2026-2027 Season

I think it’s totally fair to not connect with a director’s work—everyone has their own taste. But I do think it’s worth asking for a little more specificity when the criticism is as broad as “she’s not a good director” or “I wish she wasn’t directing this.”

What, specifically, isn’t working for you? Is it pacing? Visual storytelling? Actor blocking? Tone? Concept? Those are the kinds of things that actually make a critiq

what's next for Caissie Levy

If the options are there, she should try for film/tv.  I think all that warmth/natural presence you are mentioning would work even better onscreen.  If Spielberg saw Ragtime, I could see him keeping an eye on her -- he loves to cast NY stage actors.

Fear of 13 closing June 28?

Jun 10, 2026 — 5:26:12 PM

I still can't get over how many spelling/factual errors there are in the bios on their website:

From Tessa Thompson's: "Thompson has appeared in stage productions of Off-Broadway Smart People (2nd Stage Theatre) and regionally in Blue Skies for Alabama (Pasadena Playhouse)" - for a second, I thought it was a new take on Blues for an Alabama Sky

Ironically, from Ben Thompson's (no relati

2026 Post-Tony Closures and Successors

There are many shows leaving that are limited run and, reasonably, some might wait out in the hope that they can catch some audience based on the reduction of options. Also, theatres and theatre owners are likely far more hesitant to kick out a show short of it being an abject failure (see: BEACHES).

There is a lot of strategy adjustment/post-mortem taking places after last night.

BRIGADOON in Pasadena

Jun 3, 2026 — 5:14:43 PM

I was in town and caught BRIGADOON this past weekend, and I thought it was absolutely delightful. It's not a show I'm especially familiar with, but there are some lovely songs peppered throughout the merely pleasant ones. The set is stunning, and since the show is so awash in a kind of magic and mystery, they did well establishing that tone early on. I loved the design elements top to bottom, right down to the costumes.

Performance-wise, the leads are charming as all get out. v

Chicago Spring/Summer 2026

Separately, Chicago Shakespeare Theater says it has postponed its previously announced production of the musical “Ain’t Misbehavin'” due to performer schedule conflicts and has replaced it with a new marital comedy by Scooter Pietsch, titled “Fault.”

Teri Hatcher and Enrico Colantoni will star, with Jason Alexander returning to Chicago Shakespeare to direct. Performances will begin on April 18 and run through May 24 in The Yard on Navy Pier (tickets and more information at www.chicagoshakes.com).

Does anyone know why Teri Hatcher dropped out of this production?  I don't see any official statement that was released...and this theater BOMARDS with press releases.

2026 Tony Awards Nominations!

I think “Chess” was praying for a f*ck ton of nominations this morning to help them out. Crazy for a show that started so strong.

Not just Chess, but, like, who is on the Tony Nominating committee?  I'd love to find out more about who nominates, because when all the

Pinkham's nomination is wild -- I thought that performance was absolutely terrible.

And three acting nominations for CHESS, but not nominating it for Best Revival is also wild.

The fact that they didn't get the memo that Broadway theaters clearly got (remove drunk assholes/tolerate no bullsh*t) is wild because as young as those ushers are there, they need to be trained regarding intoxicated patrons. It ruined the show for everyone in the building, and they really need to do something at that specific show.

OH, MARY! Reviews

I'm still going to the mat for Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller coming in as Mary and Abe.

I'm also surprised that no one has mentioned John Early, especially given his connection to Cole.

Yes!  Somebody Somewhere is unequivocally terrific.

Speaking of Jeff Hiller, he'd also made a handsome Mary Todd.  Or an interesting Lincoln opposite Everett.  That's probably more of my Somebody Somewhere revival dreams than anything, though.

This is a terrific idea!  I can't believe Everett hasn't done Broadway before...even as a Mama Morton replacement.  I know she's ultra niche...but she could do a straight play or a musical (and this is sort of both)

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 2/1/26

Feb 3, 2026 — 4:20:34 PM

Crossing my fingers for Brandy to step into DBH...or just try to woo Kelly Rowland to take over for Michelle.  Not that she would sell tickets, but Taylor Dayne would be fun for that role too.

Rocky Horror Show Revival Cast

They're also not a conventional theater performer- more of an queer scene & nightlife performer. Their casting bolstered my confidence the production, if that's the sort of performer they're rounding out the ensemble with. But we should be expecting a casting announcement in the next couple weeks."

COYOTE UGLY musical adaptation with music by Diane Warren to premiere in West End in 2027

Dec 11, 2025 — 2:07:09 PM

It's very BURLESQUE in its set-up, but a few things about this intrigue me.  The first is that the original writer is adapting it.  If it is going back to her original screenplay before it was put through the Hollywood factory, maybe the producers are aiming for a storyline with a bit more sincerity.
The second is that the story actually presents itself as a great framework for a musical.  If you know the movie, you can see a lot of the numbers forming in y

Having just seen Ana Gasteyer's holiday show (which is fabulous, by the way), I'd also love to see her take on Helen.  I saw her years ago in Rocky Horror and Wicked and her voice has only gotten stronger.  She's able to dial that brassiness back when needed and go soft but can peel paint with the best of them.

Purple Rain is postponed for now.
