2026 Post-Tony Closures and Successors

This obviously isn't something I want to write / talk about, but unfortunately all signs are pointing to a pretty sizable mass culling on Broadway after this year's ceremony (if you include all the limited-run plays).

If rumors are to be believed:

  • I have it on good authority that TWO STRANGERS is getting ready to announce a June 28 closing next week, assuming it doesn't win best musical. It will be launching a new ad campaign for the home stretch which they will continue to use for the national tour. Said tour is Equity and two of the current Bway understudies are allegedly headlining. CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF is the Longacre's most likely next tenant.
  • TITANÍQUE'S ship of dreams takes a sharp U-turn and closes on its originally scheduled date of July 12. Next up at the St. James is most likely a limited run of David Byrne's new concert WHO IS THE SKY?, followed by a star-studded revival of 42ND STREET led by Sabrina Carpenter.
  • If August casualty RAGTIME wins best revival of a musical, CATS isn't long for this world and probably doesn't make it past July either. At the moment they are trying to work out set, staging, and logistics for a non-Equity tour. Shuberts seem to want a limited-run play at the Broadhurst next and are real close to executing the stop clause on the Jellicles. Meanwhile, A FEW GOOD MEN, starring Bradley Whitford, starts in the fall at Lincoln Center before Jasmine Amy Rogers and Patrick Wilson lead a revival of THE SOUND OF MUSIC in the spring.
  • Best musical win or not, SCHMIGADOON! is not expected to further extend past January and may even close earlier. Nederlander has already given producers the latest date they must end, as Neil Patrick Harris and Julianne Hough are getting ready to star in DAMN YANKEES.
  • I would also expect 2-3 more long runners and/or mid-tier shows to pack it up around Labor Day, joining MOULIN ROUGE! and DEATH BECOMES HER among our more prominent imminent closures. Keep your eyes on SIX, STRANGER THINGS, & JULIET, and MAYBE HAPPY ENDING. THE GREAT GATSBY is fine through the holidays as they are starting to stunt-cast soon.

This is so depressing. Especially regarding Jellicle Ball. It wasn’t for me, but I love that it is a show of pure joy for people who feel othered and can feel completely themselves and seen by this production. Hoping it can last.

Bleak, but not unexpected!

Lets fast-forward to next season and cross our fingers…

I find that Sabrina Carpenter rumor to be deeply suspicious.

Same. But it’s still more believable than the Timothee Chalamet Frank rumors! 😂

I know rumors are rumors, but a Sabrina Carpenter-led 42nd Street sounds like something producers would absolutely jump on. I can already picture the ticket prices.

I am a co-producer on Two Strangers and Damn Yankees and NONE of things you've said about EITHER show is actually true...

Any idea regarding the casting of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof?

"David Byrne is on tour through the middle of September. I find it hard to believe, at his age, he would jump immediately to Broadway even for a limited run.

I can say with certainty that Sabrina Carpenter is NOT attached to the revival of 42nd Street. The production is happening, but she has no involvement.

I'm not certain even a quarter of the above will actually happen. However, I will say that the mezzanine of Schmigadoon was barely half full the other night--if they don't win, I can't imagine them making it to January.

1) This has been a year for geriatrics on Broadway. He did two runs of American Utopia in his late 60s and was out dancing in the floor of HERE LIES LOVE at 72. He is, like Andre de Shields, one of the “Well-derly”

2) Broadway has really come to love David Byrne because he brings new and interesting concepts. He’s become Broadway’s weird uncle and I’m here for it

CATS is staying afloat fine for right now. It’s not making money, but it’s not losing it either. The Tony wins they are likely to get will give them a boost (Costumes and Choreo are on lock, and strong odds for Direction - Revival and Featured Actor are the wobbliest prospects).

There is not a chance in hell they will fold in July. My best guess would be September at the earliest if it sinks, since the summer gays are looking for a show and that seems to be the winner. I can imagine they will push on to January provided the sales are there. I know with the extension that the more expensive seats (runway, stage) are getting snapped up for many performances.

TITANIQUE seems most likely to sink (pun intended). With a $1M breakeven, they aren’t even close to making the necessary coins and I can’t imagine Celine’s people are kind about forgoing their royalties

You always have these "sources" in the grosses threads and they are usually premature at best or straight up wrong at worst. Most recent was your Beaches closing date statements. Obviously it was in trouble and did close but like many other times before, your date was earlier than what actually happened.

Obviously Two Strangers would be on shaky ground if it doesn't win Best Musical but I am not sure they would close that soon. Ditto for Titanique. No way in hell Cats is closing in July with or without a Revival win.

They will get no meaningful boost from any win except Best Revival, and even that rarely results in a huge sales uptick. Unlike Best Musical which does still have some sales value.

This may be a year where a REALLY great performance on the telecast (and future clips on YouTube/IG/TikTok) could have more value than the actual wins. I don't know how Cats and some of these shows will come across on TV.

Two Strangers has been the only new musical this season to be consistently hitting or surpassing its weekly break even point thanks to its tiny cast. Even without major Tony wins, I can’t imagine it closing so quickly after the awards.

I dont think Cats has come off that well on TV appearances so far, so I think the Tony performance would really need to be special.

The problem Cats has is it's a show already a lot of people hate. Those that do love it possibly won't be into this new concept which isn't close to the show they love. And the new concept is quite niche and likely won't attract people back who have hated the show in the past.

Why would the Shuberts want to execute the stop clause on the Jellicles? Looking at recent grosses it seems to be doing just fine, certainly not in stop clause territory.

Exactly. I watched those performances and everyone looked amazing, but the performances were very meh. People has never really known what Cats was about, and yes many people hated it. But, let's talk about the people who are coming to NYC and looking at a Broadway show to see. They will see Cats and say "Oh, I saw this in the 90s, no need to see it again". And barely anyone outside of NYC knows what ball culture is and doesn't seem interested. The show makes money weekly but not enough to profit for these and many other reasons.

EDSO -- as usual, your forecast of doom and gloom is --- at a bare MINIMUM---75% incorrect (and more likely closer to 100% dead wrong).  But you just keep on doing your thing...whatever that may be.

Can confirm. I don't know where OP J is getting these rumors but they better not be from a loser on TikTok who has zero credibility  ;)

Some intriguing possibilities.

Have seen the Few Good Men rumor elsewhere so I believe  that’s in the works.

Same with 42nd Street (the notice went up) but nothing about Sabrina (she was also rumored to be doing Cabaret and that shuttered without her or Miley Cyrus)

But it’ll be a tough fall - seems to be the prevailing mood whenever I’ve heard the short-term future of Broadway come up.

Yes, J and I have talked about his doom/gloom stuff in pms. He has minimized it a great deal after the "BROADWAY IS NEVER OPENING AGAIN AFTER COVID" thing, but if he's just getting these rumors from someone as awful as that TikTok person, it doesn't matter.
