Re: A Celebration of Rodgers and Hart (Carnegie Hall, 10/5/26) - LuPone, McAlpine, Mueller & more.

It was a thrilling evening. Nearly 30 classic songs, most of them wonderfully executed. Myle Frost was outstanding and did an amazing My Funny Valentine and a very movie This Funny World, Lizzie McAlpine's "I'll Tell the Man in the Street" and Liz Gelles "It Never Entered My Mind", Joshua Boone's "Have You Met Miss Jones", Patti Lupone's "I Could Write a Book" and "There's A Small Hotel", Cassie Levy's "Glad to Be Unhappy" and "Blue Moon" were just some of the highlights. And also want to sal

Heard Tony Shalhoub has joined the revival of "Rhinoceros". Guess they will be kicking off the fall season (2027) with "The Full Monty". That would be a great way to start the season!

A Celebration of Rodgers and Hart (Carnegie Hall, 10/5/26) - LuPone, McAlpine, Mueller & more.

A friend bought tickets through ASCAP, as it's a performance for their Foundation, which is a non-profit.

Thomas Kail, who did "Proof" last year, is to direct and the co-star w/Carell is reportedly John C. Reilly. It's a Limited Engagement.

Downstate Premiering on Broadway this Fall?

Another great year for revivals. And why shouldn't forget about "Much Ado About Nothing"! I think "Downstate" like "Every Brilliant Thing" (which I had never heard of) and "Appropriate" (which I thought might be a new play given its limited exposure) would be considered a revival. But the one thing that's consistent about rules and regulations of any awards committee is their inconsistency!

Downstate Premiering on Broadway this Fall?

More likely it's going to the Barrymore for a Limited Engagement. It should make the revival category interesting next year as it will be up against "Three Days of Rain" and "A Few Good Men". With Mantello directing, it should be an excellent production. But the Mackinnon version set a high standard.

Tony Predictions, Best Revival Play (2025)

Apr 28, 2025 — 11:10:49 PM

Did not see Home but saw the other six possible revivals up for nomination...most recently Othello and Glengarry Glen Ross. I very much liked Eureka Day earlier this season, though I don't know how it qualifies for a revival since I don't anyone who had seen a production of it. It's not a traditional "revival" in that sense. But I think it will definitely be nominated. And I hope Jessica Hecht is nominated in the category of featured actress. "Yellowface" was never less than interesting and h...

Broadway Flops you love that everybody else hates

More recent shows would include: American Psycho (dazzling production overlooked) and Bridges of Madison County (wonderful Jason Robert Brown score)and from the 80's Craig Carnelia's memorable score from Is There Life After School? A show that's evocative of a time in everyone's life, sadly overlooked at the time.

Will We Ever See a Best Little Whorehouse Revival?

Feb 13, 2025 — 8:07:21 AM

It's a surprisingly conventional musical and the satire is tame given where we are today. A revision of the book should be considered. And I do believe there might have to be a different approach re the (arguably) enjoyable Aggie number, romping and stomping...but it's a very listenable score.

New Musical, DEAD OUTLAW, from Penna/Yazbek/Moses

Dec 3, 2024 — 12:08:25 AM

I'm surprised they didn't announce the theatre tonight. The Belasco would be a perfect fit for Outlaw. But if you're going to open before late April, in a crowded season, wouldn't you know where you were going by now? Wouldn't cast members have been alerted to a rehearsal date? Looking forward to wherever they land!

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 11/3/24

Nov 7, 2024 — 8:32:58 AM

About "Maybe Happy Ending"...I think it might have fared better off-Broadway, looking at shows that have eventually succeeded. The buzz was very positive when it played down in Atlanta, but that was in February of 2020. The delay, caused by the pandemic, helped to erode whatever initial word of mouth the show had. It might have also benefitted from an off-Broadway engagement, which had helped shows in the past like "Avenue Q" at the Vineyard or "Dear Evan Hansen" at the Second Stage or "The B...

Maybe Happy Ending or Our Town. If you could only see one, which one?

Our Town . It's a wonderful production and Jim Parsons is superb.

Our Town or Stereophonic

Oct 18, 2024 — 12:32:51 AM

Stereophonic is a fine play and has excellent performances but I believe there are replacements about to join the company and so much is dependent on that ensemble. Our Town is such a great play and this is a beautifully realized production. Jim Parsons is giving a wonderful performance as the Stage Manager and Katie Holmes, Richard Thomas, Ephraim Sykes and Zoe Deutch are also in top-notch firm. Having never seen it on Broadway, I was truly mesemerized and deeply moved. I would suggest trying...

OUR TOWN Previews

Sep 27, 2024 — 9:35:42 AM

I am a newbie to "Our Town"...I know-- everybody is familiar with it. I wasn't so I came with an open mind...and was surprised at how engrossed I was by the play. I had seen Leon's work on "Fences", "A Raisin in the Sun" , "A Soldier's Play" and "Top Dog" and I think he's one of our best directors and I was highly impressed by the production, beautifully designed and superlative performances from the large ensemble, most especially Jim Parsons, Ephraim Sykes, Zoey Deutch and Billy Eugene Jone...

Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk & Bill Burr Will Lead GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS on Broadway, Spring 2025

Aug 8, 2024 — 10:24:40 AM

I really like this play but even more so the casting. It's spot-on. That's one of the hottest trio of stars to come to Broadway in a long, long time. Oh, wait a minute, I forgot about American Buffalo and Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss. Mamet sure can write the roles that attract exciting actors...

Metcalf stars in Hunter’s LITTLE BEAR RIDGE ROAD at Steppenwoolf, directed by Mantello

Aug 5, 2024 — 5:38:02 AM

In a year full of stars coming to New York: Gyllenhaal, Washington, Clooney, Downey, Jr., Farrow and LuPone, Nicole, Audra, Darren, Nick and Adrienne, I don't know how much business this would do on Broadway. Might they be wiser in choosing an off-Broadway venue like Adam Driver is doing or Aubrey Plaza did last season. This is a compelling, intelligent play that provide a rewarding evening of theatre and Laurie is giving a first-rate performance but I think it would be better served in a mor...
