From Comingsoon.com:

Pierce Brosnan will star opposite Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!, the film adaptation of the hit musical for Universal Pictures and producing partners Playtone and Littlestar. Variety says the movie begins shooting June 25 in London and Greece.

Brosnan sang a few Irish standards in the indie drama Evelyn, and sang onstage early in his career. But this will be a decided departure for an actor best known for playing the steely James Bond.

Brosnan will play Sam, one of three men summoned to a Greek isle by a young woman who believes one of them is her father.

For Brosnan, the opportunity to belt out such ABBA standards as "S.O.S.," which will be a duet with Streep, was irresistible.

"I said yes right away because it meant working with Meryl Streep," Brosnan told the trade. "Secondly, I saw the show with my family in London, and found it just so wonderfully happy and joyful, and so pitched in time forever in the 1970s. What a kick in the pants, to be able to go off and spend time with Meryl on some Greek island, singing ABBA songs."

Mamma Mia! is being produced by Littlestar's Judy Craymer and Playtone's Gary Goetzman and Tom Hanks. Rita Wilson will executive produce with Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, latter of whom wrote the tunes when they were the creative catalysts for ABBA.

Phyllida Lloyd, who directed "Mamma Mia!" in its London and Broadway runs, is helming the picture, which was scripted by Catherine Johnson. She wrote the book for the stage musical, which recently surpassed $2 billion in ticket sales in more than 140 cities since opening in 1999.

Brosnan takes the job while preparing a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair, which John Rogers scripted and Brosnan is producing under his Irish DreamTime banner. A director will be set shortly and production will begin before year's end.

Oh please...get over yourselves people. The musical has made a friggin' gazillion dollars and a movie was coming sooner than later. I for one think that Meryl playing Donna is totally in line with the roles she has taken lately...she's one of the few actresses that can tackle any role, place her tounge firmly in her cheek, and make it work. Brosnan as well is another actor that is willing to take risks.

I mean, seriously, what's the big deal?

Hmmm. That'll be an odd pairing.

Who am I kidding? I'll see it five times.

I think its a win/win. Either the movie will be actually good, or so good its bad. I doubt it will ever be boring.

I don't understand these one sentence opinions:

"This is not looking good" and "*pewk* Ewww..." without elaborating or at least backing up those statements.

I HATE the idea of a stage show playing on Broadway using a thin, second rate book embedded with ABBA songs but I LOVE the idea of a movie musical starring Meryl Streep singing ABBA songs. I'm quite content this film is happening--IMO, it should've always been a film NOT a stage piece in the first place.
I'd have never thought of Brosnan for this project, isn't Bill Nighy rumored for Harry?

I didn't like Mamma Mia until I saw Carolee Carmello in it. A great actress can elevate the material.

I really hope this movie is camped out to the max. O how I want it to be a so-bad-it's-good movie that I can just put on to cheer myself up. I think this casting news keeps my hope alive.

Thank goodness I don't care about the source material too much that I care how the movie will end up. I just want some great, campy fun with a great, campy Meryl. Though I wish Olivia Newton-John was in it.

I just hope Anne Hathaway gets cast...if she is even being considered for the role. I certainly expect camp to the max, that's what should make it so exciting.

Exactly how I feel about it. To my knowledge, there aren't any Mamma Mia! purists out there, so as long as they sing some ABBA songs, the fans won't mind. Neither will I. And I'm sure Meryl isn't too shy to camp it up!

Is it sad I'm more excited about this film than I am about SWEENEY TODD? It just looks more promising and relaxed...and they got Meryl Streep unlike SWEENEY.

I am too. I think it's because we all care less about how this one will turn out. Mamma Mia! is no masterpiece whereas Sweeney is. It's more unforgivable to screw up Sweeney than Mamma Mia!. And come on, Meryl's in it!

I'm still a little bit afraid that it will come of as more cute than funny. That was the feeling I had when I saw the musical. I felt that the mixing of ABBA songs with british low brow feministic humor was not a good fit, but hey the world loved it! I think the strenght of Mamma Mia the musical is that it is packed with great melodic pop hits. People choose Mamma Mia because they know that they at least will hear good melodic pop music all night through that appeals to the whole family, except for perhaps the teenage son who wasn't going anyway (ok gross simplification). I have been more worried about the movie because whereas there are few musicals that are packed with good melodic pop music there are countless movies with great soundtracks (although not musical movies). I hope they sharpen the humor and the dramatic arc for the movie. I know they will have one more song with a little bit more mature sound "When all is said and done". I hope that they also add "Happy new year" and a scene of a wintry New York but It doesn't seem like they will do that.

Even though the Broadway purist that will always be inside me was screaming out Louise Pitre at the computer screen when I heard about the movie, I have gotten over that now. I am very excited for this fun campy movie and I cannot wait for the actresses for Rosie and Tanya to be announced. Bette and Goldie?

I realize that she's not a universally known film actress, but Judy Kaye was outstanding (IMO) as Rosie on stage. I really hope they give some consideration to casting her in the movie.

Well, beside the facts that I am excited about the film, because I LOVE the show AND Meryl, it is very thrilling that it will be shot in my country !!!
I just hope that I'll be able to visit the set and bring you guys some exclusive pics !!! It's a lot of responsibility, knowing that, I'm the only member this board can count on for that LOL

You know I have been excited about all of the movie musicals. Even still after I heard about Zac Efron but this is stupid. Meryl Streep may have a daughter my age but she looks to old and she does not look like she could ever get Pierce Brosnan to possibly make a child with her. This all could be avoided if they fire her and bring in Olivia Newton John because she is the "one I want". LOL

I guess Sophie's already been cast...

Amanda Seyfried. She was funny as the "dumb one" in Mean Girls and plays one of Bill Paxton's kids on Big Love (HBO). We'll see if she can sing...

Not as interesting as other choices (Hathaway, Mandy Moore, et al) but still fun, she was indeed quite funny in MEAN GIRLS.
Judy Kaye is quite a talented performer but if they're gonna do a MAMMA MIA movie, I wanna see big Hollywood stars (a la HAIRSPRAY) singing those ABBA hits in those campy Star Trek looking costumes.
I hope this film doesn't take itself too seriously.
