"I'm trying hard to tone it down, gotta watch my P's and Q's" from Footloose. I love the show but there are some bad lyrics in there.

"you reach your goals in your comfy old Rolls,
Or in one of your Mercedes-es."
-How Can Love Survive?

I hate the way Kurt Kazner says that.

and later, in the song;

"When you are poor it is toujours l'amour,
For l'amour all the poor have leisure!"

I love the song, but those lines annoy me.

And then, do you know Monseiur Marius, I believe I was a little in love with you.

I'll add Bare, even though I know it's OFF-Broadway.

BARE is guilty of using the most cliche "poetic" lyrics ever. The sung dialogue is pretty bad too - very rushed and almost incoherent. And the authors adapting the Shakespearean text to music: yuck!

*big breath*

If someone like you
*five minutes later*
Liked someone like me
*Five minutes later*
Then suddenly (What a surprising rhyme, huh?)
*Five minutes later*
Nothing will ever be the same.

You could just end it there. Poetry.

Will one of the people who likes the "bridges" line from Wicked for its nuance or moving hidden meaning please explain it to me? As far as I can tell, I understand the line and its significance, but I just think it's really poorly written. I'm a big Schwartz fan, though, so if someone could redeem the line I'd really appreciate it. I laughed out loud and said "you're kidding" when I heard it at the show.

See, there are these bridges. And you, like..cross them. BUT, here's the kicker, you didn't KNOW you crossed them, UNTIL you crossed them.

I just don't get why people would make fun of that line...

I don't know if somebody said this already but after a while the constant rhyming of Producer and sir in The Producers begins to get a little unoriginal

^ Okay, that brightened my day. LOL.

Anyway. "Every endeavor I have made, ever," from JEKYLL AND HYDE - "This is the Moment." Really, the whole song is pretty bad, but that lyric is just... so... ridiculous...

Ha ha! I'm not gonna go back and read ten pages to see if someone said it, cause I highly doubt they have. BUT the worst broadway lyric EVER would definitely be "Freight is great!" from Starlight Express.

Ira Gershwin had some pretty terrible lyrics, all of which can be found in "Crazy for You" he makes clever rhymes and has OK meter, but he really twists the language around in order to get it to fit, which is for me the gravest crime of a lyricist

"Have some pity on an Easterner;
Show a little sympathy.
No one possibly could be sterner
Than you have been with me."

"The only work that really brings enjoyment
Is the kind that is for girl and boy meant"

"One stitch and you'll" to rhyme with "Shmuel." - Last Five Years (still one of favorite musicals of all time, though.)

"arm in arm, we're gonna eat mashed potatoes and pie.
arm in arm, we're gonna do the dishes. dishes? uh huh!
arm in arm, we're gonna save the dishes for tomorrow.
I LOVE YOU!"

the song: arm in arm
the show: here's love

awful, just awful!!

Feathah - I figured the rhymes in "The Schmuel Song" were supposed to be a little obvious and silly. After all, this is a song that unapologetically uses the word "limb-o-vitch."

I have to agree with justagirl2 on those "I Should Tell You" lyrics,
but I found another one and it's even worse.

"So tell them we'll sue, but a settlement will do
Sexual harassment, civil rights, too.
Steve, you're great. NO, YOU CUT THE PAPER PLATE!"

Excuse me? What paper plate?
What in the HELL is going on?!

fossemoves AMAZING comment! I fully agree, it just not good, haha.

Honorable Mention- A Chorus Line- At the Ballet, Just for the record I love the rest of this song and the rest of this show, but the line..."That everyone is beautiful at the ballet, every Prine has got to have his swan" ??? I mean, it sounds lovely and its very pretty, but i just dont understand the whole swan thing at all. If I'm missing something about it, please fill me in.

The whole song "I Hope You'll Like It Here" from WIW..... oh my gosh.... For example... "We're thrilled that's indisputable,
I hope your rooms are suitable, your sentence is commutable"

"I told you to get out!
I simply can't go on
My nerves are fraying...
What was I saying?
Oh, mostly I desire
A quiet atmosphere
As silent as a sepulchre
No utterance about a purr
Just nod you head
If you concur
I trust you'll like it here." what the hecK?

I have been really trying to decipher what those words meant for YEARS...
"Steve, you're great. NO, YOU CUT THE PAPER PLATE!"

Excuse me? I beg your pardon?
(pronounced to sound like "Ex-squeeze me? I baking powder?")

And NOBODY HAS EVEN GIVEN ME A SOLID EXPLANATION, NOT EVEN MY RENTHEAD FRIENDS FROM HIGHSCHOOL!!!

Oy. Figured you'd probably be the only ones I could turn to in situations like this. {crosses fingers}
