After seeing the clip of Emma Thompson singing at the Lincoln Centre as Mrs Lovett on youtube, I can honestly say that I am dreading her singing "Tale As Old As Time".

I know she had to put on a cockney accent for the role, but to me she just doesn't have the same range that Angela Lansbury had when she sang it in the 1991 animated film that made the song so iconic and wonderful.

I think Ms. Thompson will do a wonderful job singing the title song. I think she has a fine voice for it.
I also happen to think she is far from the worst Mrs. Lovett that has ever been recorded and that she did a more than serviceable job performing the role.
Well we'll just have to wait to see now who Bill Condon casts as Lumiere. My fingers are staying crossed for Tom Hiddleston anyway cos i don't know anybody else who will be able to pull it off as good as he will. I mean, they only have 5 weeks left until they go to London with it to start filming. Who would you cast as Chip?
jimmycurry01, did Emma Thompson perform in a recording of Sweeney Todd?? I thought it was just those concert productions.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw will be playing Plumette!
What about Ralph Fiennes for Lumiere?

The concert was recorded on video for PBS, it's not available through an official release though. It is it out there though.

The wait for the announcement of who is playing Lumiere is killing me. I'm guessing it will be someone who is around the sage age as Mbatha-Raw. She is around 32 or 33.

What an ageist thing to say. It's also shallow and innaccurate.
I heard hiddleston will be lumiere
What's with these stupid new names? Plumette?! Huh?!
But, great for Gugu! :)

Is Woolverton involved with this?!
I don't get why they need to add new characters.

I don't think they will have someone around the same age as McKellen playing Lumiere. In "Human Again", Lumiere is clearly a ladies man by singing the lyrics "be good looking again with a madameoiselle on each arm".
"
I know me too. Well Tom Hiddleston is 34, so i REALLY REALLY HOPE that they pick him for Lumiere. He embodies everything that Lumiere is. He has the charm, the good looks, the singing voice, the dancing skills and he is one hell of a good actor. I would be gutted if they didn't pick him.

I'm sorry if I offended you best12bars. I was just making an assumption and clearly it was not a good one.

Plumette? Garderobe? Please stop messing with the names.
They're "messing" with two characters who are unnamed in the original film.

Thank you!
I wonder if there will be new songs.

Right?! Thank you!! It wasn't said this movie was based strictly on the Broadway musical.

The film is a remake of the original animated film with new songs from the Broadway show added, it's an original take incorporating its own elements in neither the show or movie so renaming the characters is A-OK.
I'm actually hoping they'll keep the Broadway songs to a minimum. I loved the show as a kid, but even then I could tell that (with a few exceptions) juxtaposing Rice's lyrics with Ashman's was like putting a sharpie doodle next to a Picasso.
"Me" is pretty good, though, and definitely an attempt to fit in with the kind of vocabulary that was established with "Gaston."
