Haven't the rights always been available, even during the Broadway run? I thought I read somewhere that the producers kept them available and there's even been regional productions while it was on Broadway."
Yes rights have always been available for the original, pre-broadway, material. We had a local high school do it in the fall and a small regional theatre has it on tap for the summer.
There is a current (or just closing) production in Chicago.

Don't a lot of shows that fail to recoup on Broadway make the money back -- albeit slowly -- via tours, licensing, etc? I feel like with a couple of lyric changes, this show could be a steady earner in high school and community theater for a long time. It seems like measuring commercial viability by the length of an initial run is only measuring a small part of the business."
Revenue that comes in from tours or licensing doesn’t make the initial production any less of a loss. Productions are separate from the material.
Just bought tickets for my husband and I (my second time, his first) to see the final Saturday performance. I tend to root for the underdog and am sorry to see it leave so soon. I thought the score was uneven - there are songs I loved and a couple that I hated - but the set and sound design are fantastic and Jason Tam should've been nominated for Best Featured Actor.

Seems they may be back in some capacity. Their social media is teasing a 4.0 upgrade.

They just announced they're opening Off-West End in February at The Other Palace.
How do you think it's gonna do over there? I think this is Joe Iconis' first international production, so good for him.

literally why is this happening?
I guess they think they need to ride the wave while it is still moving.

The Other Palace is exactly the right place for Be More Chill; it's the only fringe venue in London that really dedicates itself to musical theatre, it's a medium size venue, and cult shows play short runs there for a bit so the show gets seen and a market for further licensed productions can happen.
It's very unlikely to move anywhere from there, but could potentially make a little money based on young adult hype. Regardless of your feelings about the quality of the show, from a licensing/production perspective it's not a terrible idea.
The breaking news item refers to it as "the smash hit Broadway musical".
Oooooohhhkaaaaayyy. Guess the bar for that is lower than I thought.

See, this is the kind of stuff the show should be doing. Limited, fringe-sized engagements in international/regional theatres. I'll admit I'm not a fan of the show in the slightest (I really tried...), but clearly it has it's fans. It shouldn't try and pretend like it'll be a long-running smash musical, when it's a perfectly serviceable niche musical. This seems a lot more appropriate.
