Christopher Walken and Constantine Maroulis recently had their "caricatures" done by someone for Sardi's.

The drawings completely lack soul, exaggeration, or humor.Whoever is making them is clearly not from the Alex Gard or Al Hirschfeld mold.

So I was wondering, are they even meant to be caricatures or are they just supposed to be paintings?

I did not like Constantine's at all.

If they're supposed to be paintings, then they don't really look like the people that they're supposed to be, most of the time, either - two off the top of my head are Alice Ripley's (I would never have even guessed it was her) and Gavin Creel's (though I might have been able to guess his, I still remember thinking that doesn't look like him.) Christopher Walken's recent one looks somewhat like him, but when did he get flowing blonde hair?

I think they used to look a lot more like the people, and they should either make them true caricatures or make them look more realistic.

charicatures are not supposed to look like them so much, but recongnizable. i agree if they were paintings, fine. but these "charicatures" are not very good

You're so right, Sally. I've been noticing how their caricatures don't evoke the personae of the actors at all, and of course, don't even resemble them.

Surely there must be a plethora of artists around who can do better. there must be some nepotism or something going on!

Agreed. The artists I see on the street draw better!

I've said this before, but Sardi's caricatures remind me of when your friends ask you draw them and you purposefully exclude their flaws so you won't offend them.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

I've never cared for the caricatures at Sardi's, particularly the ones from the past 5 or 6 years. I don't expect Mad Magazine (Jack Davis/Mort Drucker) quality, but come on...

The Tony Di Napoli portrait of Constantine is much better than the Sardi's one, Tony's at least looks like him.

So bad Sardi's, so bad. I will continue to pass you by when I am in town.

They're terrible recently! My favorite was Alice Ripley's.
I mean REALLY?

That is a typical 5th grade drawing. Now I'm convinced - Mr. Sardi's brother's niece is doing the caricatures.

Maybe they've decided they don't want to hurt any feelings with their caricatures? Yeah, but they're absolutely horrendous. I don't think they qualify as caricatures. When the recognizable features on a performer's face are more exaggerated in real life than in the drawing, it probably can't be called a caricature.

I really hope that's not the case (for a multitude of reasons).

Well, if that "artist" made one of me along those lines, I'd be offended, LOL!

Sardi's caricatures are soulless

I agree, they've just been awful lately. Think of the caricature potential they had for Brian D'Arcy James, and this is the best they could do!? The eyebrows are smaller in the drawing than they are in real life!

They're just not caricatures. These people are theatre professionals, I'm sure they're thick-skinned and self-aware enough to go "why yes, I DO have a massive nose!" while simultaneously recognising "holy crap, I'm on the wall at Sardi's!".

They should hire Felix, his caricatures fill me with squee and glee.

It's like every bit of their faces have been airbrushed and botoxed.

Why are those heavy contour lines the things that stand out the most? feh.

This is one of the many reasons I will not eat at Sardi's. Never have, never will. I don't wanna be surrounded by pictures kids in pre-school could do. And the pictures scare me.

Tony Di Napoli's definitely have the best paintings for Broadway actors/actresses. They actually look like them.

I know the main artist now lives in Fort Worth and just does things based on photographs...

I ate there once two years ago, after my dad insisted. It was actually fairly easy to ignore the "art." The mediocre food, however...

HC, they look they are being done from photographs with no knowledge of who these people are.

What a friggin' waste of everyone's time.

Do them right or don't do them at all.
