i really liked Alex Ellis's interp of the song. really gave it new heart. i can't really stand Kerry Butler and i think she is way overrated. Just give the role to Alex!
I love Alex Ellis, she is really really great. I don't however think it was exponentially better then Kerry's, but definitely not worse. In the theatre, I was stunned by Kerry's performance of this song. But opinions opinions.
I agree that they have similar qualities in their voices.
bwayfan, I agree with you somewhat. I think she has the same style voice as Kerry and would go as far as to say they have VERY similar tones. The difference is that Kerry sounds super forced while Alex just seems to be able to sing the notes without belting her face off.
"belting [one's] face off" comes in two varieties though. Shoshana belts her face off, but she does it effortlessly. Kerry belts her face off, but it literally looks like her face is going to fall off she is trying so hard. It's more like screaming than singing.
I would see this show again to see her as Brenda! So good.
Question - did they change the order of the lyrics since previews, or was that just a mistake that she made (and covered up seamlessly)? (She started with the 'when I was a child' verse and later did the 'men who you call real' verse.)

LOVE Shoshana's version. But am I really the only one that liked Kerry's version as well? At least when I saw it, she was absolutely fantastic - not strained at all
