I almost cried when I read this post. Seriously cried. Now I understand that not everyone is old enough to have witnessed stage magic of legends gone by, BUT please, if there is any hope for the american musical theatre tell me that you are not serious! Look, I LOVE Nathan Lane and LOOOVE Kristen Chenoweth twice as much, but do you realize what the term "of all time" means. You are talking about the entire Golden Age of American Musical Theatre as well as the last 20 years. Let me just clue you in: there was theatre before Les Mis!!!! Years of it. Even if you weren't there to experience it there are recordings and books and videos to guide you. Please. If you call yourself a musical theatre fan and only know the shows from the last 10 years that will get you no where. The reason today's theatre is lacking is exactly this reason. No one is prepared to really examen the old material and work from past successes and failures to create a genuine GREAT piece of musical theatre.
Please tell me someone remembers Zero Mostel, Jerry Orbach, Robert Morse, Victor Moore, Phil Silvers, and John Cullum.
Please tell me that someone wants to give a shout out for Elaine Stritch or Bea Lillie or Barbra Streisand or Mary Martin or Angela Lansbury or Nancy Walker or Ethel Merman!!!!!
Because if no one does, I may just die.
gherbert, did you read mine? Lansbury all the way!!! LOVE HER!
"Please tell me that someone wants to give a shout out for Elaine Stritch or Bea Lillie or Barbra Streisand or Mary Martin or Angela Lansbury or Nancy Walker or Ethel Merman!!!!"
Then why don't you? What do you think?
Again, my opinion is based on what I saw, now out of all time, so I didn't answer exactly what the thread asked. Except "All I Ask Of You," but that is my opinion again.

Yes I did read yours and agree. Lansbury is one of the greats.
And I love how everyone chooses to ignore my rant.
HELLLOOOOOOOOOO!!
Greatest villain of all time: Captain Hook!
THERE'S EVEN A SONG ABOUT IT, FOR BADNESS SAKES!
I totally agree with the posters who said that there was theatre before Les Mis. Now I love Wicked (*ducks the tomatoes thrown at me*), Hairspray and modern shows as much as anymore, but there are tons of amazing shows that were written more than 20 years ago, and if you love musicals, you really should check them out. You can't appreciate where things have gotten to without knowing where they came from.
That said, here are my votes:)
Best Villian in a Musical(of all time)- Jud Fry, OKLAHOMA
Best Comedy Actress in a Musical(of all time)- Ethel Merman. DUH! Bernadette is wonderful, too.
Best Comedy Actor in a Musical(of all time)- Zero Mostel, in anything he ever chose to do! But I'll cite FIDDLER, since I feel I need to choose something.
Best Duet(of all time)- If I loved you, CAROUSEL
Best Female solo number(of all time)- "Don't rain on my parade" from FUNNY GIRL
Best Male solo number(of all time)- "On the street where you live," from MY FAIR LADY
Best Ensemble number(of all time)- I've always been partial to "Brotherhood of Man" from HOW TO SUCCEED
Just my thoughts.:) Peace and Love, kids. Especially on this election night.

Magictodo: I can breathe again. Thank you. Your choices are all valid and interesting.
You're very welcome. I mean, I rock out (can we use the phrase rock out in regard to musicals) to Hairspray and the new crop of shows as much as anyone here, but I started loving musicals because of Cole Porter and the rest of the classics. :)
