The key to the mystery of a great artist is that for reasons unknown, he will give away his energies and his life just to make sure that one note follows another... and leaves us with the feeling that something is right in the world. ~Leonard Bernstein~

I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

Oh, and of course SWEENEY TODD and FOLLIES. And for the same reasons--

FOLLLIES starts with a thin tenor solo over a lone, tinkling piano, then suddenly flowers into an enormous parade-like orchestration over warm, gorgeous harmonies.

SWEENEY starts with a rumble--a reedy, monotonous little clarinet vamp. The first two male soloists grumble out their lyrics, as if at gunpoint. Then--a sudden flare-up into the "Dies Irae" chorus, with harmony ringing out like the "Anvil Chorus."

I guess there must be something about vocal/orchestral explosions that gets to me...

I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."
