Hello. I'm reminded of the "Will and Grace" eppy where Patti appears as herself. She remarks: "they either love me or hate me." I happen to adore her. I've seen her perfrom in concert: Austin (1996, 2000), Dallas (2001) and Houston (2003). I've been lucky to see her theatrical concerts as well: "Sweeney Todd" in San Francisco (2001) and "Regina" (2005). It was my supreme pleasure to see her Broadway run in "Sweeney" (2006). So, from my perspective, she is a wonderful artist, whether she's singing or acting. Part of her appeal is that she has a sense of humor...

I have a great patti lupone story.
I just finished working on the Will Rogers Follies at the Sharon Playhouse in Sharon, CT. The famous, "pizza lady of Sharon," told me that a week earlier, Patti Lupone came in (Sharon is the home of many celebs such as her) to the shop and was outraged at the prices. She continued yelling at the pizza lady as the pizza lady began to escort her back to her car. Patti Lupone picked up a garlic shaker and threw it at the pizza lady. This was the last time she was in the Pizza shop in Sharon. This is a true story i heard during her week long break from Sweeny Todd.

Here's the thing... I know that Patti's a good singer. Her belting is amazing. She has amazing power to her voice. She's the only Evita whose death has ever made me cry. Etc etc.
But I just don't like her voice and, in many cases, her acting. For instance, I absolutely HATED her Fosca in Passion; I had no idea why Giorgio would leave Clara for her. I'm not fond of her Mrs. Lovett, but that could be because I prefer Angela Lansbury's portrayal as a sweet but misguided lady.
I'm not saying that she isn't talented, and that she doesn't deserve her fame. I'm just saying that I myself do not enjoy her singing.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

Merman acted like a Diva. As does Barbra Streisand. I've never understood why people allow it from them, and just find it funny or whatnot, but for some reason bitch on about Patti for certain things that she has said or done.
I think, from interviews and things that I have seen with her, that she seems to be a very down-to-earth, very honest woman. Read her "Ramblings from the Road". It is mostly saying how excited she is to work with the people that she works with in her different projects - this to me seems humble. I admire that.
I think she is a proper actress. Someone for whom every second is about the work - not about herself. That is why she admires people that she works with, because the work itself excites her. She is a true artist. I think the moment that the work stops exciting the actress, they stop being an actress and start being a celebrity/diva.

They say in Litchfield County that when the garlic shaker hit the famous pizza lady of Sharon just above the eye, a drop of her blood dripped into the pizza sauce, and for the first time ever, her pizzas became palatable.
That was when the famous pizza lady of Sharon became famous.
And it was all due to Patti LuPone and her garlic-shaker fastball.

This thread is an attack on the original poster. I am shocked at how many people have lashed out at this poster and attacked the singing voices of Idina Menzel/Shoshana Bean simply because this poster has stated her opinion (and people feel the need to lash out at her because of her chosen screen name, Elphaba). Shame on you people, and personally I would rather listen to Menzel almost anyday over Lapone - and I own plenty of both. There, now the lashing can begin on me!
However, comparing the two are like apples and oranges. Please let this poster state her opinion and if you don't agree there is NO NEED to insult Menzel. Thank You.

If LuPone could learn to always stay with the tempo and improve her diction, one might be able to put up with her arrogance. At least she doesn't prance around like an aging children's beauty queen contestant

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! She sucks! She was on WNYC a couple months ago (www.wnyc.org) and search for it. She is so pretentious and carries that façade of learned ACT-tor. Like she studied in France or something. No wonder television doesn’t want her.

After hearing her SOME PEOPLE, EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES, and ROSE'S TURN from Gypsy. There is no need to explain Patti LuPone . Those 3 songs explain it all.
