My initial reaction is fu*k this sh*t. Pirate Queen has no redeeming qualities at all? Not even Stephanie's performance? I'm heart broken. Updated On: 5/15/07 at 10:46 AM
From the opinions that you have posted on the shows of this season in other threads, this list looks more like who you personally would like to win than who you actually think is going to win.
"Winning a Tony this year is like winning Best Attendance in third grade: no one will care but the winner and their mom."
-Kad
"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."
-bjh2114 (on Michael Riedel)
They were pretty much what I expected. Not what I would have chosen, but par for the course for the Tony nominators. I also knew right away that SA is going to win best musical.
No, those are seriously who I think will win. I'll edit the post to show who I think should win, but my original post is who I, right after the nominations were made, thought would take home the prize.
The only two that I really care about are Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. I thought they were both Brilliant! I am sad that neither John McMartin, Bob Stillman or Matt Cavenaugh were nominated. I loved Grey Gardens.
I saw Mary Poppins twice in London and I think it's a terrific production, and it wouldn't upset me if it won Best Musical, but I'm rooting for the Beales.
Also...I realize and agree that Pirate Queen does not deserve a best musical nom (as much as I liked it) it's not up to par with Mis or Saigon, HOWEVER: costumes? Lighting? Choreography? It definately deserved that. Lestat even got a costume nom last year, which were amazing, but so are PQ's people!
Also slightly bummed at no Les Mis noms but it should have been a MAJOR revival not just a come back.
In my opinion, if there was ever a year to not give an award for BEST MUSICAL, this would be it. There is not one show out there that moved me to the point of being awestruck. 110 & STAIRWAY came closest to being, IMO my favorite musicals of the year...but, BEST NEW MUSICAL...I just dont think any of them deserve an Award naming it THE BEST! If I had to pick the best of a crappy group, then I guess it's CURTAINS imo that deserves it! But even then, I have awful reservations about that.
It's fun and fine to disagre...but Grey Gardens nearly put me to sleep, I couldn't stomach Spring Awakening for one minute longer, and yes, Mary Poppins had its merits, but I perfered Curtains merits to MP's.
I really DON'T think A Chorus Line is going win Best Revival. At all. (shudder)
I also don't think Mary Poppins is going to beat out Grey Gardens, or even Spring Awakening, which seems to be everyone's new omg-its-the-best-show-ever. They'll be getting it right this year by making GG Best Musical 2007 :)
"Now she wants to know WHY, if I'm so fabulous, I would WANT to take care of her child.....I answer with as much filigree and insouciance as I can muster, trying to slightly cock my head like Snow White listening to the animals. She, in turn, is aiming for more of a Diane-Sawyer-pose, looking for answers which will confirm that I am not there to steal her husband, jewelry, friends, or child. In that order."
The Nanny Diaries
A Chorus Line could pull a Pajama Game and steal the win from Company. That would be sad.
I agree with jlnyc, what about Cheno? She got snubbed. The show overall didn't get amazing reviews, but the critics all raved about her performance. She was great in the production.
i just hope spring awakening doesn't win. i'm sick of all the hype and it really wasn't that amazing. i wouldn't be sad if mary poppins wins, it certainly has the wow factor.
