Do "Les Miz" "Phantom" and "Miss Saigon" have a book? Aren't they sung through?

Book doesn't refer solely to the spoken words between songs, it's also the overall narrative and structure of the show. As a book writer, I could say "and we'll have a song where the lead guy does this, then we'll send him offstage and bring on the comedy villain, and this will tell the story in the most concise and entertaining way" and just leave my lyricist to work out the finer details. ^_^

Don't know about greatest books, but the worst book I have ever - and will ever, if there is a god - is 'Gone With The Wind'. MAN it stinks! XP

if you wanted to be technical, MTF3's list is basically made up of Through-Songs. NOT "Musicals"

Through-Songs are shows (some consider them contemporary operas) with no structured book or speaken word. Dialouge is sung through reoccuring motifs and classical reciatatives.

Blaxx... we tried to get this child banned. it didn't work.

I would still consider them musicals tho. The only one that feels like an opera to me is Phantom.

Ah, TooDarnHot, what you don't know about musicals could fill a library.

I'd say the best "book" for a musical was Gypsy. Maybe Ragtime would be on there. King and I is pretty damn good too. It's a good question- as a wise man once said the book of a musical is like the flour in a cake; It doesn't make the cake taste good, but try baking without it.
